Missives from Missouri

Monday, July 20, 2015. Today I found a post about Children's Art: Do You Love Kid's Art? I have always loved art created by children. It is the thing I miss most from teaching in elementary school. When I visit schools, I pay attention to the bulletin boards made by children's artwork. It is raw creativity, displays by kids who are not afraid to show emotion. Here is some found artwork created by my son and former students. A mosquito drawn by my son when he was almost 3. How could you not be moved?

Missives from Missouri: A little burn SOL Day 30 for SOL#15

http://www.missivesfrommissouri.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-little-burn-sol-day-30-for-sol15.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. A little burn SOL Day 30 for SOL#15. One of the first trainng sessions with my current job was Fire Training, Level 1. To understand the reasons to burn an area, you can view before and after pictures. Burning gets rid of unwanted vegetation and provides conditions for dormant native seeds to once again flourish. Historically, Native Americans used fire to control much of their land. It was a subject on which I was very interested. First Grade at Storybook Cafe. This struck me as ...

Missives from Missouri: February 2014

http://www.missivesfrommissouri.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 1, 2014. I found several objects that drew my interest. Ice was still in the pond and I searched for the boat. It was near the water's edge, I finally saw it sitting under the water. Can you see it? I was looking for signs indicating the arrival of spring is nearing. I tried to take pictures of samples of spring, budding twigs. One was from a Sassafras, others were bushes I haven't yet identified. Our walk gave me hope that the arrival of spring is indeed near. Nature Bits: What Scat is That?

http://nature-bits-and-bytes.blogspot.com/2014/09/what-scat-is-that.html

Bytes of the Outdoors. Saturday, September 20, 2014. What Scat is That? How good are your "scat skills"- the ability to identify an animal's presence by scat alone. I thought I was pretty good at it. I even have a scat collection. Eww! But last month I was stumped by the presence of some pretty distinctive scat on the deck. Plus the most logical choice, a hummingbird, would not have this large of a dropping. So was this a snake or lizard? I don't often see snakes on our deck but have seen lizards, so thi...

Nature Bits: August 2014

Bytes of the Outdoors. Monday, August 25, 2014. Final Stop in My Quest to Find Nature. The last stop on my quest to find nature while on my European vacation was Germany. Here we would spend time in a small village and in Berlin. What impressed me most in Germany was the transportation system.rail lines serve the small towns and bring some of the students to school. There is also a "fast train" to Berlin, which we took. All in all, I was impressed with conservation efforts in Germany. These are proba...

To Tubac and Back. Sunday, April 21, 2013. Farm, Fairfield, VA. Farm, Fairfield, VA. Oil on canvas, 10x10. AS I SETTLE BACK. Into life in Wachapreague, start winding down the Tubac trip paintings and starting painting for the summer show season, I have heard myself say - more than once - "the trip was great, the West is gorgeous, but there's no place more beautiful than Wachapreague.". Thinking about that, I have realized that the painting trips I have taken have been about discovery - and rediscovery.

Nature Bits: A National Park in a Different Nation

http://nature-bits-and-bytes.blogspot.com/2014/08/a-national-park-in-different-nation.html

Bytes of the Outdoors. Monday, August 18, 2014. A National Park in a Different Nation. This blog is a continuation of my report on looking for nature during my summer vacation in Europe. Up to this point in my travels, I had seen little of nature compared to the US. I was most excited to schedule a trip to Italy's National Park.Cinque Terre. Surely, if nature were to be found, it would be here! You can see the rugged countryside with scrubby looking plants. We walked through olive groves, saw yucca- ...

http://nature-bits-and-bytes.blogspot.com/2014/10/what-is-your-favorite-season.html

Bytes of the Outdoors. Tuesday, October 21, 2014. Which is Your Favorite Season? I have been away from this blog and my home for the last couple of weeks exploring our national parks in Utah. (more about that on a later blog post). When I returned, I was amazed to see the change in our woods. Fall is here! This photo is from our trip; it seems that fall is everywhere. http://nature-bits-and-bytes.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Bytes of the Outdoors. Thursday, February 27, 2014. When is an Owl Not an Owl? It has been said that people should learn a language at a young age, when it is supposedly easier. I think that also applies to the "language of nature". Bird songs are a good place to start. My young granddaughter knows at least 12 bird songs and she is not yet three years old. How did this happen? But what about owls? She doesn't say, "That's an owl." She will say, "That's a Barred Owl," or "That's a Great Horned Owl&#46...

Bytes of the Outdoors. Monday, May 26, 2014. Are Parks for the People? I have been reading Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire. In preparation for a trip to Utah's National Parks. As I think about getting our pop-up ready for the summer season, I think about what he had to say about crowded parks being like little cities. What is green space when it is packed with people? Where is the communion with nature when overpowered by the presence of too many people? If parks are for people, what about people like me?

Missives From a New Mom

Missives From a New Mom. Thursday, December 16, 2010. These are the Days. Apparently you people weren't joking about the "terrible twos." While I hate that term, I now realize that it's not modifying my Evangeline, but rather the age, so I am trying to reconcile with it; there is so much to reconcile with when it comes to this age two; less than a month in and I feel upended, the carefully honed symbiosis I had with my sweet girl shaken. What an honor it is to be her mom. Missives from a New Mom. Sunday,...

We spent the weekend on Lake Ontario in New York state at Golden Hill state park. We hadnt had a chance to get out camping for quite a while. It was something we used to do quite a bit, and we are car camping masters. If you ignore our regular forgetting of key items- flashlight, sleeping pads, matches). We did get those kayaks out on the lake, too.
