Missy has been racing on the roads since 1996. By 1999, Missy had qualified for Olympic Marathon Trials, been signed to a national women’s racing team, been accepted into the USATF athlete development program, had received NC Runner of the year twice, had received the LifeScan International Athletic Achievement Award, and … had learned to live, train, and race with Type 1 diabetes. Welcome to MissyFoy.com. Missy is an elite marathon runner . . . and she has diabetes. The only diabetic runner ever to qualify for Olympic Marathon Trials, she has been on the US road racing circuit for the past 10 years. Missy has recently entered the ultra-marathon circuit as well. Still running at a top competitive level, Missy took second place at the US 50 Mile National Championships in September 2007 and in 2005 she was ranked in the top ten in the world for 50 Miles.

So, why is living and running with diabetes difficult? When our body makes insulin, tiny adjustments happen in split-second time intervals – insulin can be pumped into the bloodstream very quickly and then shut off just as quickly. With this finely tuned system, a person is not aware of very tiny fluctuations in the amount of glucose (sugar) in his/her bloodstream and the person rarely suffers from high or low blood sugars.
