May 19, 2012. Holland with dear friends. When we visit, we thoroughly enjoy boating on the lake near their home. We lucked out and had a beautiful day- a little cold but very sunny. Mark and Hans even got sunburns! Mark and Hans on the electric boat on the canal. Apparently Nieuwkoop use to have many thatch providers. However, since less than 1 percent of the Dutch homes have thatched roofs, this business is now one of the few thatch providers left. A swan and his reflection. The Nieuwkoop petting zoo.

June 1, 2012. Finding OZ and Santa: A cruise to the Baltic (in two parts). St Petersburg was our next stop. The Russians require all Americans to have a visa or to be part of a tour. Since we had only booked our cruise two weeks in advance, we were unable to get a visa or to arrange an independent tour.
