Over Keel - Week 15 - Venture 24 Keel Repair III

The Keel Deal III. Spent another hour or two amid mowing, trailer work, and going to see. Here you can see I have used some thickened epoxy to reglue the filler chunks back to the keel. I will fill in the middle after I sand those flat this sunday. I also laminated three 3/4 in pieces of cypress to form my new winch board for the cockpit. I will proceed to plane, sand, epoxy, and varnish this piece. So that's how she sits as of August 8th. Back to Over Keel Home.

Lake Maurepas, LA. Took the boat out this summer to Lake Maurepas to try it out. People really dont sail on Lake Maurepas much, and this is why:. You have to go under a bridge to get to it! But that is what the mast raising system is for. The boat did not leak a drop, which suprised me. Very smooth under power in calm water and no wake at speed. In rougher water, it was rough under power, but that seems to be what all sailboats are like from my experience. Back to Over Keel Home.

Epoxied (rudder head, lazz cover, companionway V hatch, slider hatch). On the inside I glassed the seams and put a second epoxy coat over that. I also epoxied the hull-cap junction. Undercoated the rudder head. Finished the epoxy on the cap and then undercoated it this weekend, followed by filling of any holes. Another view of the undercoated cap. Hope to final coat in 2 seperate days (planes and trim). Looking more finished. Hopefully next update she looks ripe for a maiden voyage! Back to Over Keel Home.

In two weeks of prepwork i sanded, epoxied, and faired everything within 6 of the water line. This will allow me to sand near the waterline without disturbing my bottom paint line. Its looking a little junky, mostly thanks to family, but some of it is me. I kept the water line straight, possibly more than before although it is 1 above the old line. Needless to say there will be some bottom paint above the water. Paint keel and trunk, reinstall keel and keel winch (have to buy one), put on the trailer.

Week 22 and 23. I decided to be honest and just come right out and say that is is two weeks of work. Spent hours and hours sanding the epoxy coat down smooth and primed it with HVLP @ 55psi thinned 10% petit easypoxy undercoater. I do not recommend petit paints if you like your primer to be workable or you like your paint to dry. The primer coat did not come out well due to low thinning and high pressure. I then sanded this coat and filled 47 areas with marine filler and sanded. Back to Over Keel Home.
