The Runaround: September 2012
http://mikekennedy5280.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Sunday, September 23, 2012. I chose not to post about Paul Ryan’s ridiculous marathon claim, simply because I didn’t want to spark a political debate (or at least throw more gasoline on the fire). However, when I read the story in the New Yorker about Kip Litton. I couldn’t resist this one. Lying is certainly annoying. Cheating is reprehensible. You can buy a finisher's shirt for a race that doesn't exist. You know why neither of those things ever happened? There were approximately 523,000 marathon finis...

The Runaround: August 2014

Sunday, August 31, 2014. How a Hotel Ruined Athens. I’m at least a little demanding when I travel. I’ll admit that. For example, when I go to a restaurant and order a ribeye, I do not like when they come back with a hamburger. Likewise, when I reserve a room at a hotel, I expect them to put me in the agreed upon room, preferably with some resemblance to the photos on the website. Now, I understand that rooms in Europe are generally smaller than those in the U.S., but this one was a fire hazard...We we...

The Runaround: July 2013
http://mikekennedy5280.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 20, 2013. Denver's New Exercise Laws. On most Saturday mornings, like today, I get together with friends and go for a long run somewhere around Denver, followed by breakfast. Like a lot of people, I started running when challenges in my life reached a point in which I needed an outlet. I found that outlet in running, in large part because I met so many great people. That’s why I was so troubled when I read articles in the New York Times. Seriously, I wish I was kidding. Are you kidding me?

Tuesday, November 5, 2013. Voodoo, Strip Clubs and Poligrip: The Portland Marathon. Sometimes I choose races simply because I have friends going. And, if I’m lucky, those races also happen to be in great cities. The Portland Marathon was one of those races. My good friend Jim Lynch. Who moved to Maui a few years ago (if you’re a runner, you should definitely check out his blog. Jim, Jay (not pictured) and I decided that. We needed to carboload at Voodoo Donuts. Waitress: Strip clubs. There’s th...Immedia...

The Runaround: Taking Our Time in Tuscany
http://mikekennedy5280.blogspot.com/2014/08/taking-our-time-in-tuscany.html
Friday, August 29, 2014. Taking Our Time in Tuscany. The heart of the Chianti region. We have seen a lot of wonderful European cities on this leg of the Funemployment Tour, ranging from London to St. Petersburg and Stockholm to Athens. Each one has an energy and a beauty unique to itself. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of things to do and sites to visit in each one. Each one is exciting. And each one is exhausting. It was exactly what we needed. Almost every town in Tuscany. It tasted as amazing as i...

The Runaround: June 2014
http://mikekennedy5280.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 23, 2014. That's a Wrap on the South American Leg. While sitting on a plane out of Quito, I considered writing about our time aboard a ship through the Galapagos Islands. It was wondrous and jaw dropping. There were giant tortoises, magnificent birds and a few penguins. The eight days left me nearly speechless, at least enough to admit that I simply cannot capture it in words. Instead I’ll sprinkle a few photos throughout this post. I loved the fact that I woke up every morning to a glass of...

The Runaround: December 2013

Monday, December 2, 2013. Who Doesn't Like Running on a Sheet of Ice in 12 Degrees? For the past 7-8 Thanksgivings, I’ve woken up and headed to Washington Park in Denver for the annual Turkey Trot. It’s a fun four-mile run that makes most of us running feel just a little better about gouging ourselves at the dinner table a few hours later. The north end of the race course a few days after Thanksgiving. However, I quickly discovered that I wouldn’t have to miss out on Turkey Trotting entirely. Thirty-six ...

The Runaround: May 2014

Saturday, May 31, 2014. The Salkantay Trek Begins. Views are always better when you earn them. Stopping on the side of a highway to look at a scenic overview is nice, but when you climb the mountain to reach the view, it’s just somehow more majestic. Fran and I at the trek's starting point. Old age be damned. I was ready to go. After a two-hour trip through cloud forests and up to Mollepata, we loaded up our daypacks and started at 2,850 meters. The first day was only about seven miles, but it was a stee...

Tuesday, September 9, 2014. Best of the European Outtakes. It’s been a week since we returned to Denver, and it feels great to be home. The past four months have been unbelievable in every sense of the word. I’ve chronicled much of it within this blog, but there were some things that didn’t fit. So, here are a few of the highlights from the European Leg of FunEmployment. If you get lost in Athens, this dog can show you the way. Just you and two beautiful women? You're a legend.”. Peter the Great was an i...

The Runaround: No Place Like Home
http://mikekennedy5280.blogspot.com/2014/09/no-place-like-home.html
Monday, September 1, 2014. No Place Like Home. One of our final sunsets in Nafplio, Greece. About six months ago, my life reached a crossroads. My job, as I knew it, had taken a new direction – one that I simply could not take with it. Around the same time, my girlfriend, Fran, was going through almost the exact same thing with her job. Life was changing, and much of it was out of our control. It has been nothing shy of unbelievable. But a trip like this cannot last forever. That part, too, feels right.
