Mlanda Primary School educates 1,800 children in 8 Form groups with 12 teachers. Class sizes range from 60-200 pupils, in simple classrooms. The children sit on the floor, taught with a simple blackboard and desks only in the classrooms for the older classes. Sustain Mlanda knows that the Primary School is the best facility through which to reach and care for the children of Mlanda. At the school, along side their education the health and welfare of the children can be monitored. Desks for more classrooms.

Mlanda has a small medical center which is funded by a central hospital called Nkhoma which is 2 hours away, and Nkhoma provides the medical center with staff wages and medicine but there is no provision for maintenance, equipment, bedding and other services. The Medical Center has five main wards, including a Children’s ward and Maternity Ward. There is also an HIV out reach center, outpatients department and several side rooms. Sustain Mlanda was initially started to support a group of orphans in a village called Chiphikira. Sustain Mlanda has made it a primary part of our work to care for all of the essential needs of a growing group of orphans in Chiphikira. We currently provide for all school aged orphans in Chiphikira, but the other children and relatives in each family they are adopted into also benefit from the support of Sustain Mlanda.
