In truth, only atoms and the void. Let the Universe Be the Universe. Mysteries of Time: New Teaching Company Course →. Guest Post: Joe Polchinski on Black Holes, Complementarity, and Firewalls. September 27, 2012. Of course, and he was a co-author with Ahmed Almheiri, Donald Marolf, and James Sully on the paper that started the new controversy. The dust hasn’t yet settled, but this is an important issue that will hopefully teach us something new about quantum gravity. At the time, this seemed like an int...

The Curious Coasters of Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Modified from a post I wrote on July 30, 2009 over at MetaFilter. I will be headed to Busch Gardens Williamsburg on May 22, and will hopefully have a story or two to tell from all of it. The Big Bad Wolf howls no more. The Virginia amusement park with a friendly Western European theme, announced on July 24, 2009 that it was officially retiring The Big Bad Wolf. I thought witnessing the Great PUMA Tantrum of Aught-Eight in real time was fun, but it turns out that was just the bagged crudité tray before the grand schadenfreude banquet that is the Colossal Wingnut Bed-Shitting of 2012. Good times! But is there any doubt that having a sitting president come out in favor of marriage equality made a difference?

All right, I feel. Using my Livejournal to make an actual serious post, but since most of my Mac-owning friends read this, it's a convenient place to point out that I've started working on some Mac OS X stuff, and I just released a little dashboard widget:. The S From Hell - The Worst Damn Sports Show Period. The S From Hell. Jan 26th, 2010 11:10 am. I may have spoken to you about scary production logos in the past (I've certainly linked to them enough times), and perhaps you thought me insane. "It's just something at the end of the show! When you're six, loud synthesizer tones mixed with an animated synthetic creation can seem like a demon from the pits of hell. And you know what? I am not alone! The generation game — Crooked Timber
http://crookedtimber.org/2012/08/17/the-generation-game-2
August 17, 2012. The generation game is played with particular vigour in cultural commentary, but its reach seems to be extending all the time. No US. Presidential election would now be complete without voluminous commentary on the generational backgrounds of the contenders. There is even a branch of economics called generational accounting, which is supposed to show whether one generation is subsidising another through the tax and welfare system. Age-group posturing of this kind changes in response to c...

Namesake and nebulosity - Doctroid's Page of Scientific Mysteries
http://doctroid.livejournal.com/99846.html
Doctroids Page of Scientific Mysteries. Or, wallpaper paste must be good for something. We haven't had many clear nights lately, and on what few we've had I've forgotten to go out and look. It was mostly clear tonight, though, with a day old moon, and the next several nights are forecast to be cloudy. It was, in other words, possibly our last, best chance. Kenny and I went out in the driveway with a pair of binoculars and saw Comet Holmes. Posted on Nov. 10th, 2007 at 09:24 pm. So how did Kenny react?
