Obviously there are pros and cons to this technique. While the overall database schema is simplified, viewing and editing the XML metadata is cumbersome. Having said that, I've found the tradeoff acceptable in certain scenarios. Let's consider a table containg a standard field (name) and another field (properties) which will contain the XML metadata.
