Voorsanger’s garden court was to add public space and improve internal circulation within the library’s collection of buildings; Renzo Piano was hired to do the same, albeit with more money and more square footage. Is it the building that failed, or the writers of the program? And who is to say that the replacement won’t itself need to be replaced in a decade? Three gawky buildings, cut down before their prime. Is the architect or the program at fault?
