Even though each person may get different kinds of support, all good supported living arrangements have some things in common. Starts with real person-centered planning. Planning and supports are there to suit the person's needs. People with disability and their families steer the decision-making. Staff are well-trained and supported to work with people and their families. Housing and support are separate things.

What It Is Not. How to Start One. Where in the USA? Lanterman Act and Legislation. Happier, more stable staff. You can be flexible with how you pay staff and other arrangements. You can employ them to do admin work if they are dependable and smart. Utilize unpaid supports more often. You could have an accountant on your board of directors who agrees to take care of your payroll, or a farmer who offers some produce or other work for your child, or someone who agrees to employ your child.

Can We Save Dollars With Supported Living? Imagine that we have gone from large agencies to funding individuals. (This is coming whether we fight it or not.) The cost of supporting people will go down for some and go up for others. Some people will have higher support costs. They are hiring 1:1 staff and share staff less often. In general, costs are going up. We need to think about leveraging community resources, increasing quality (same $ but better quality) and long-term results.

A California amendment which arose in large part from the sad state of California state institutions, driven home by parents, ARC, and a courageous legislator, Frank Lanterman.
