Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Thursday, March 22, 2007. Learning From the Samaritan Woman. John 4:4-26, 28-30 4. 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it? He cannot be the Messiah. can he? 30 They left the city and were on their way to him. Imagine going about your regular chores and ending up having a conversation with Jesus Christ! But this time is different. This time she talks to Jesus! Here is ...

Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Monday, April 03, 2006. The Last Word on the Journey. And, yet, this most important of all news is not shouted from the mountain tops for maximum effect. I think that those of us who are His disciples, have a lot to learn from this. This is the way that God works with us. This is His way: the way of intimacy, and personal sharing of news, as we go. Was going to Jerusalem, He says to His disciples, See,. How tragic that would be! Well, you w...

Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Monday, March 06, 2006. As I write this, I am weary and dejected, without vision or energy, or even hope. As I read Paul’s letter, I am inspired and even more dejected. By my own weary faith. How did that happen? This is the example he wants us to imitate: devotion to Christ at all cost. So, Paul has lost his mind, right? He has lost his heart. To Christ. I marvel at Paul’s wholehearted devotion to Jesus Christ, and his ability to rejoice a...

Today in the Desert: September 2006

Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Thursday, September 21, 2006. At the Feet of Mercy. And, what’s more? I am struck by this story of the Syrophoenician woman. I take comfort in the story of the Syrophoenician woman because I identify with her. And, in spite of a unpromising beginning, her story ends well because of Jesus Christ, to whom she wisely and determinedly turns, bowing down at His feet. Even when He wants to be left alone. Ezekiel 26:3, 21). Reaffirms my faith in H...

Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Monday, May 08, 2006. So, This is Love? In this passage as the Lord Jesus confides in His disciples, He uses the word love nine times. It must be worth repeating. Yes, the Father acknowledged Jesus as His beloved Son, in whom He was well pleased, to whom we must listen. But. The Father also so loved the world (the undeserving, unrepentant, sinful world) that He sent His Son for its salvation. The Father’s purpose cost the beloved Son Hi...

Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Saturday, April 07, 2007. Have you lived long enough to know that sometimes it’s dark at noon? There is no light. Not even a flicker. It doesn’t matter that it’s the middle of the day, when there should be brightness. It’s like the sun’s light has failed. And the whole land is covered with complete darkness as far as your eye can see. Have you lived long enough to experience life like that? Dark Despair. Death. Desolation. And love. Unc...

The Chagall Paintings: February 2006
http://chagallandruth.blogspot.com/2006_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, February 09, 2006. Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian born French painter. Born to a humble Jewish family Chagall passed a childhood steeped in Hasidic culture. His paintings often reflect biblical themes. The series below is based on the Book of Ruth, which resonates with me on many different levels. I'm grateful to Chagall for the color, imagination, artistry, and even the not-so-subtle sensuality he has brought to Ruth's story. Posted by Ruth at 7:36 PM. Wednesday, February 08, 2006.

Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Saturday, January 27, 2007. When The Wine Runs Out. 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."4 And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? What do you do with a passage like this one, when you feel empty? Wine was a nece...

Today in the Desert: August 2007

Today in the Desert. Reflections on selected Scripture passages. Sunday, August 26, 2007. I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.". I took it personally. I prefer to be ministered to by something...
