Friday, 19 August 2016. Pyramid Peak is one of Unalaska's hiking classics. We woke up to a sunny day this morning and with it came calls for camping from the kids. I was scheduled to teach Sunday school in the morning so a hike it was. Jake looked out our front window and made up his mind as he stared up at the tallest accessible peak, Pyramid. Friday, 19 August 2016. Chernofski Expedition Part 3. Chernofski Expedition Part 3. Strawberries, Helicopter Rendezvous, and the Shaler Mountains. Within minutes I had consumed several handfuls of them. The average size of each berry was at least the size of a man’s large thumbnail or slightly smaller than an average salmon berry. The sand was remarkably pristine and almost powdery in consistency when dry it was legitimate beach sand! While continuing on toward our next mountain pass we encountered an ar...

Friday, 19 August 2016. We make an attempt at climbing Makushin Volcano (42 Miles). As we continued down the shoreline in our kayaks we were visited by a seal that I suspect was looking for fish beginning to head up the river for the summer salmon run. He was curious of our presence for only a few minutes until he disappeared into the dirty waters beneath us. So we continued toward the northwest end of the bay to beach our kayaks for the trip to come. At this point in the journey, we whipped out our self...

Friday, 19 August 2016. Chernofski Expedition Part 2. Chernofski Expedition Part 2. 3 days into the hike the Pacific Ocean and a white sandy beach. Interestingly enough, we even came across evidence of some sheep. We found part of a fleece caught in the weeds and a few bones which appeared to be from the body of a lamb. This wouldn’t be the last sign of sheep, as we would find even more indications of sheep being present in the days ahead. The SPOT also has the ability to send custom messages, and in our...

Friday, 19 August 2016. Five day hike to Makushin Volcano. The initial weather reports, that Friday afternoon, were a bit bleak as they indicated a fast moving low pressure system coming out of the Southwest. The forecast seemed to indicate that the winds would be initially out of the East at 10-20 MPH with precipitation starting around midnight Friday evening. Considering that we were planning on camping at approximately 1,600’ that first night, we knew the winds would be more than interesting. The last...

Friday, 19 August 2016. Over 22 miles round trip to Portage Bay. My wife dropped my friend Tully and me off at the end of Captain’s Bay, near the last bit of commercialized fishing docks. We proceeded under a gate at the end of the road and began our journey down the small stretch of old World War II road that would eventually taper off into nothing more than wild grass and tundra. As we drew close to the large waterfalls ahead, we decided to take a break for lunch. Several hours had already passed a...

To start, follow the road across the creek and continue with it along the north side of the lake. The old military road will begin to bend left up the adjacent hillside. The road will quickly disappear as it starts to zigzag upward. Only deep ruts remain for hikers to follow. Eventually the ruts tapper off and only spongy tundra remains. The hike down is qu...
