Schrijver Paul Sheldon is de geestelijke vader van de zeer succesvolle maar door hem zo gehate, romanreeks over Misery Chestain. Hij beleeft de nachtmerrie van zijn leven als hij na een zwaar auto-ongeluk gered wordt door Annie Wilkes, voormalig verpleegster en 'zijn grootste fan ooit! In 1990 is het boek van Stephen King verfilmd met Kathy Bates en James Caan in de hoofdrollen. Kathy Bates ontving voor haar vertolking van Annie Wilkes de Oscar voor Beste Actrice.
