Alaska 2009

Mike and Susan drive the Alaska Highway, experience their first home exchange. And meander back home 7 weeks later. We had fully intended to keep a journal of our driving trip to Alaska. Our New Zealand 2010 blog. Has been a wonderful way to preserve memories and organize photos. With a little perseverance, I think we just may be able to think back and create something similar for the Summer of 2009. Entering Alaska from Canada on the ALCAN Highway. Alaska 2009: June 2009

http://www.molloys2009ak.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Mike and Susan drive the Alaska Highway, experience their first home exchange. And meander back home 7 weeks later. Anchorage Area (June 26 - 28). Our first full day in Anchorage we spent . going to Whittier! Nothing against Anchorage, we just enjoy scenery and wildlife over cities. We especially loved the route along the Turnagain Arm. After a lunch stop in the ski town of Girdwood, we drove up around Alyeska and saw a porcupine briefly as he scurried across the road. Porcupine (shot through windshield).

Alaska 2009: July 2009

http://www.molloys2009ak.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Mike and Susan drive the Alaska Highway, experience their first home exchange. And meander back home 7 weeks later. Back Home and Final Thoughts. After Banff the trip began to feel almost like going downhill. Anticlimactic. We spent a night in Billings again and then drove straight home. Montana and Wyoming are beautiful, but the landscape was almost prosaic after the astonishing scenery we had in our rear-view mirror. What a summer we had! And we plan to have more. Denali (aka Mt McKinley), 20,328'.

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Dream Lake Hike (Jan 27, 2015). We had our heads down "working" at home when we learned that Tim and Karen, recent transplants to Colorado, were heading up to Rocky the next day, and asked if we wanted to join them on a winter hike. Here are some photos from the hike. Frozen over Nymph Lake with Hallett Peak in background. The trail above Nymph Lake. Tim and Karen on their way up. Dream Lake, with Hallett and Flattop Mountains.

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Milky Way over Lake Irene (Oct 24). Interests me, but I'm not really an astronomer-type with a camera and telescope (like my talented photographer friend Pat. But I do enjoy trying to make images of the stars. I like being outside, especially in a really dark sky area. Image from near Walden, Colorado during Aug 2013 Perseids. Though most of Rocky Mountain National Park. Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Fading Light and Active Clouds (May 25, 2015). As the light began to fade today, Susan said, as she often does, "you should take a picture of that.". She is usually right, so I did. :-). Here are a few pictures taken as the light faded on the mountains around our house. Detail of the rocks and trees to the southeast. Rocks and trees to the east. Detail of some formations to the south. Monday, May 25, 2015. View to the northwest.

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Almost Home: Denver and Breckenridge. While we were sweltering in Williamsburg. http://www.justournature.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Weekend Water (June 15). Susan and I had been wanting to get up to Glacier Gorge and Alberta Falls to see Glacier Creek and the high water flow of the spring melt-off, so on Sunday we headed up into the park. I brought the tripod and other gear so we could shoot the flowing water along the way, and we enjoyed our frequent stops to take in the fast-rushing water along Glacier Creek. Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Front Range Pika Project (Aug/Sep). American Pika near Crater Lake, Maroon Bells, Colorado. We travel with a stuffed pika named "Petey" on our dashboard and I hike with him in my backpack. He's an American Pika. Of course. :-). Petey Pika on the Alaska Highway. So when I learned about the Front Range Pika Project. I knew this was the citizen science. They are not rodents! Dick was a local Estes Park photographer. We were given a ha...

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Lake Helene Snowshoe Hike (Feb 24, 2015). Susan and I have been talking about a bigger snowshoe hike for the past month or so, and we kept coming back to the idea of hiking up to Lake Helene in Rocky Mountain National Park, especially after a couple of our friends skied up there recently. We've hiked this area before, but not in the winter. We'd gotten quite a bit of fresh snow recently and heard trail conditions were excellent.

Mike and Susans adventures in travel, photography, birdwatching and life. Fairbanks, Alaska Aurora-chasing - Part II (March 10-23, 2015). Continued from Part I. The Aurora was so active this year that our chasing had left us little time for much else besides trying to catch up on sleep during the day. Not everything in Fairbanks is about the aurora :-). We never tired of our view of the birch forest around "our house". We dropped in to Creamer's Field Migratory Wildlife Refuge. A real ice house! In Fairb...

New Zealand 2010

Mike and Susan's kiwi home-swapping adventure! Marlborough Sounds (November 29). One more full day to see New Zealand. We decided to spend it on the Queen Charlotte Drive from Havelock to Picton, and take in the beauty of the Marlborough Sounds one last time. It might be a little cooler up there, and at 10AM Blenheim was well on the way to its forecasted high of over 84 degrees. Not big fans of the heat, but well aware of the weather we will be going home to, we have no complaints! It was fun to see them...

Monday, October 1, 2012. Molloys Guide to Oktoberfest. At Molloys we're all about celebrating great beers, and there are few greater beer celebrations than Munich's Oktoberfest. We now stock five of the six official Oktoberfest beers, so pick some up, find a pretzel and get in the spirit. Though the focus often seems to be on great beer, that's only a part of a festival celebrating all things Bavarian. Germany is famous for its beers and the Reinheitsgebot (German beer purity law,) but Oktoberfest kicks ...
