Welcome to my Life: June 2010

http://mollycoxblog.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 25, 2010. Life Balance is a Roller Coaster. Every child of an aging parent grapples with the feeling she should be with their parent more. It’s a classic guilt smoothie. Every working mother fights the feeling she should be at home with her child when she’s not home with her child. When you are caring for children and caring for an aging parent—fasten your seat belt, it’s going to be a bumpy ride. And it’s always best to check the safety belt. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Welcome to my Life: February 2009

http://mollycoxblog.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Monday, February 2, 2009. Red Pens For Everyone! Yesterday I went out with a friend and complained to her about the newsletters and updates we get from school that inevitably have misspellings. A misplaced comma or an apostrophe that screams:. I never learned to write but was lucky enough to get a job in the school system! Then she shared that the principal at her school sends out letters with misspellings. The principal! Honey, we just received a letter from school! And I hope that our next generation l...

Welcome to my Life: August 2011

http://mollycoxblog.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 23, 2011. It can’t be over. It just can’t be. It just got here. I know it’s coming to an end by the activity at Wal-Mart (not that I shop there) and Office Depot. The abundant commercials on TV for Elmer’s glue and super- creative-cool- hot colored folders. The month on the calendar also clued me in. Yesterday I golfed with a friend for the first time all year. It would have been obvious it was my first time out had you been there. The day is already gone.”. Time is going so fast.

V. L. Buckland: Ghosts? I live with them every day.

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2014/12/ghosts-i-live-with-them-every-day.html

Friday, 19 December 2014. I live with them every day. Reading: Women Who Run With the Wolves. By Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Listening to: "Take a Picture" by Filter. Outside: Oh, those December gusts! Doncaster postmen circa 1900. Picture from here. Back when Doncaster still had trams - 100 years later I worked in the building on the right. Picture from here. So yes, we're surrounded by ghosts. But oh, the ghosts at Christmastime are a whole other breed. It is our modern memento mori. But in a time of high ...

V. L. Buckland: The Lighthouse

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-lighthouse.html

Sunday, 9 December 2012. Listening to: "Bedroom Hymns" by Florence the Machine. Outside: Don't know, actually. I haven't been outside all day (today, I write! I have recently finished reading one of the best works of literary fiction that I've ever read. It was one of a tall stack of books, an early Christmas and birthday gift from my friend/neighbour/sister-in-law and her family (bless their cotton socks). The world inside a 184-page book is indeed vast. It reminded me of the lighthouses my mom used to ...

V. L. Buckland: The Stephen King dilemma

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2011/04/stephen-king-dilemma.html

Saturday, 9 April 2011. The Stephen King dilemma. As I have literally just today finished reading Stephen King's. I have come to an interesting crossroads about the King of Horror. I have spent years, really,. Worshipping this very talented writer, and not just because I was brought up on the likes of R.L. Stine. And who else would be such a logical step after R.L. Stine? I mean, really? Like or do you want to write something that. Likes (and will sell)? On Writing (A Memoir of the Craft). My creative wr...

V. L. Buckland: The healing effect of coffee

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2011/07/healing-effect-of-coffee.html

Sunday, 10 July 2011. The healing effect of coffee. Black as the devil, hot as hell. Pure as an angel, sweet as love. That’s what coffee is. Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Perigord. Coffee and books go together. Well Coffee and life. Also coffee and red grapes, for some reason. And so do coffee and mornings after nights of. Quiet evenings at your friends' house. And by the way, how novel is this idea. I am aware that there are people on this planet who. Have a rejuvenating Sunday. 14 July 2011 at 06:37.

V. L. Buckland: The weird and wonderful

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-weird-and-wonderful.html

Sunday, 9 August 2015. The weird and wonderful. Reading: A Short History of Nearly Everything. Listening to: "Fine Again" by Seether. Outside: The sun has set on Doncaster. There are those among us who walk in other worlds. Writers, they say, are never fully present - we store and shelve our experiences, and we wonder if we could (or should, or can) use those experiences in a story somewhere. Is this the same for artists? Any artists out there, do let me know! They are you now. When the path darkens.".

V. L. Buckland: Notes from the peanut gallery: Doncaster Writers' Group

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2011/09/notes-from-peanut-gallery-doncaster.html

Sunday, 11 September 2011. Notes from the peanut gallery: Doncaster Writers' Group. Carling Lager. Britain's Number One Lager. Don't get me wrong, I love Doncaster. I have studied at Leeds, and I work in Sheffield, which are two large bustling cities that make Doncaster look like approximately the size of a pea. I love Doncaster's quiet cobbled streets and the sort of sleepy town feel it has. I made myself read out loud, which was the first time in front of strangers since Ball State University about sev...

V. L. Buckland: Requested materials

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2011/11/requested-materials.html

Sunday, 20 November 2011. I never thought I could be so excited about a simple cardboard box. Now we have an agency in San Francisco requesting to see my little book, and so I have gone out and purchased a box. And I get to finally use that puffy envelope that I bought, expressly for this purpose, about a year ago. All I needed was an agency that wanted to see it (by post), and BOOM! Now I have one. And so now, as of Thursday, I sit back and find something else to do for three months! U can check it!

V. L. Buckland: REJECTION!!!

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2011/03/rejection.html

Tuesday, 29 March 2011. This is something one of my creative writing professors at Ball State University taught me:. 8220;If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two Impostors just the same; Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it.”. And nervously pacing up and down the living room. Wondering, agonizing,. Waiting for a reply. In fact, a couple of weeks - that is almost hideously fast. Is that a bad sign? My novel, according to her (or perhaps her readers? Hit me with it. Lloyd Ch...

V. L. Buckland: I want to believe

http://vlbuckland.blogspot.com/2015/01/i-want-to-believe.html

Saturday, 31 January 2015. I want to believe. Reading: Legends of the Fall. Listening to: "16 Horses" by Soul Coughing. Outside: Bluebells slice in earnest through the flowerbed mulch - certainly we must fashion them some hats and scarves? As we wander through this still new-ish year, approaching February and still huddled in coats and mittens, we're beginning to notice we're strolling past the season's first green hints of spring. Aren't we? First page, and the sound it makes as it turns! And then chuck...

Welcome to my Life

Monday, October 17, 2011. If there is one thing I know for sure, life is messy. As I said, messy. The theme of my life. And, I'm guessing, yours. This summer was a particularity messy month. My father broke his hip- a difficult situation in itself, but when you add Alzheimer's into the mix, the mess quotient magnifies. No doubt, the memory of your own recent messy period is still fresh. Or maybe you're in the midst of one right now. I know, this sounds ridiculously simple. After all, if you were not ...
