Father Damien, seen here with the Kalawao Girls Choir during the 1870s, took on the role of priest and doctor to lepers in settlement colonies. Father Damien, on his way to Molokai. Father Damien was a Roman Catholic missionary who helped lepers on the Hawaiian island of Molokaʻi and also died of the disease. Father Damien's church at Kalawao. Each year, the requisite Easter-morning church sermons begged me to wrap my little mind around the concept that a person who lived thousands of years ago died for the dreadful sins I was now committing and then came back to life after three days to prove that salvation and to prove life after death.
