The Sparkling Elephant Project. The MomellaFoundation was initiated in 2008 by its directors, Marlies and Jörg Gabriel, the proprietors of the Hatari Lodge in Momella and the Shu’mata Camp in the Maasai Steppe. Momella means shine or sparkle of the moon or the sun in the local Maasai language. The Sparkling Elephant Project. MomellaFoundation was founded and is headed by Marlies and Jörg Gabriel, owners of Hatari Lodge in Momella and Shu'mata Camp in the Maasai Steppe. Marlies and Jörg cooperate closely with the Momella village council, project-specific consultants and project partners on-site and abroad in the organization and management of the Foundation. The individual projects (see project description) are each represented by a speaker or management team member within the MomellaFoundation.

Ngurdoto Crater (with PDF). The crater floor, some 300 feet below and measuring about 1.5 miles across, is home to interesting fauna and flora. Like the Ngorongoro Crater, Ngurdoto Crater is actually a caldera, a collapsed volcano probably measuring 10.000 feet before its last eruption. Today the highest point reaches just over 5.000 feet.
