How they were Built. Romanesque cathedrals were built before Gothic, and just after the age of castles. The christians came to a rise of power, and built these structures. They looked more like fortressess than palaces to heaven. The romanesque cathedrals were very plain but still decorative, they had rounded arches, a few high windows and buttressess attached to walls for support. Romanesque Cathedrals were also made in the shape of a cross as shown in this picture.

How they were Built. Grotesques, semi-human figures like gargoyles were also very popular. Such images were requested by monks and bishops who paid the mason to represent the many dangers of sin in a humorous way. Aside from being an decoration, Gargoyles are also architectural features as they are 'waterspouts' protecting the walls. Used to protect mortar and stone from eroding, also said to scare evil spirits from entering cathedrals. Like gargoyles, but protect the building and serve no other purpose.
