The DL on KL: September 2013
http://misswacek.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
The DL on KL. Friday, September 27, 2013. Rules of the Road. Well, that title might not be exactly appropriate. I think it might be more accurate if it said "Suggestions of the road. but really, do whatever you want." I've officially been driving in Malaysia for 2.5 weeks. Before I started I would go back and forth daily about whether or not I REALLY wanted to risk it. Good days: "Yeah, I got this. I know lots of Americans who drive here without any problem.". 1) If you want to park there, just park there.

The DL on KL: School Spirit Week
http://misswacek.blogspot.com/2014/04/school-spirit-week.html
The DL on KL. Wednesday, April 9, 2014. One reason I don't think I'll ever be able to give up teaching is Spirit Week. For those of you who are not used to American school craziness, it has nothing to do with the Holy Spirit. The "spirit" we're referring to is School Spirit. Believe it or not, this is a real point of confusion to international families. :). I was blown away by the participation we had this year! It was so fun! Monday was Storybook Character Day. Viola Swamp from Miss Nelson is Missing.

The DL on KL: Cookin' Up Some Math
http://misswacek.blogspot.com/2014/04/cookin-up-some-math.html
The DL on KL. Friday, April 11, 2014. Cookin' Up Some Math. Fact: Every lesson is better if it involves food. Students are engaged, motivated, and really well-behaved because they know they don't get to eat said food if they act otherwise! To do this activity, I found a slow-cooker brownie recipe on line and then just modified it to add in Math. I don't know how to upload a Word Doc or a PDF. If you'd like a copy of this, just let me know and I'll email it to you! We had no problem finishing off the whol...

The DL on KL: January 2013
http://misswacek.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
The DL on KL. Monday, January 28, 2013. Grocery shopping in Malaysia has been one of the most trying experiences for me thus far. It's exhausting. First, you have to find the items you're looking for. For the most part, it's decently arranged and the more I go, the easier it is to find things. I still don't understand why there are 4 different sections of refrigerated juices. and a whole aisle of non-refrigerated juices four aisles away. And other such questions. :). No, probably not. :). White Fungus...

The DL on KL: Valentine's Day
http://misswacek.blogspot.com/2014/04/valentines-day.html
The DL on KL. Monday, April 7, 2014. You know you're a little behind in blogging when you blog about Valentine's Day in April. Oops. :) But, seeing as it's one of my favorite holidays (I'm beginning to think I over-use that term "favorite holiday". but I just love them all! I couldn't at least give it a little shout out. The day, as expected, was busy, loud, fun, yummy, and full of love and laughter. Wouldn't be an elementary school Valentine's Day without making "mailboxes". Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The DL on KL: Needs and Wants
http://misswacek.blogspot.com/2014/03/needs-and-wants.html
The DL on KL. Friday, March 21, 2014. I came across this activity. While I was writing lesson plans for our Economics unit. I thought it looked like a fun way to introduce Needs and Wants. The quick version of it is:. 1) Divide students into groups. 2) Give each group a list of 40 or so items (see page 3 of the activity) - including things like sunglasses, fertile soil, a cow, a car, toilet paper, forks and knives, a good bed, a toothbrush, a pig, etc. 4) Give them a few minutes to narrow down their items.

The DL on KL: March 2013
http://misswacek.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
The DL on KL. Friday, March 22, 2013. It's no secret that I LOVE Science experiments! Note to self: try experiments first alone before attempting them with students. As soon as we poured everything into the bag, my students started running away and hiding behind boxes to avoid the explosion (See pictures below: I'm not exaggerating! On Wednesday we did the homemade helicopter experiment. Does the length of the propeller make the helicopter fall faster or slower? Maybe our drop height wasn't high enough?
