The "Museo de Montecristi" has an extensive collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts that represent the Taino culture, accompanied by explanations regarding the significance of their symbols and mythology. Over recent years, many of these wrecks have been professionally salvaged, and the items uncovered are conserved and on display - each telling its own story, a bit of history from centuries ago.

The Public Museum, "El Museo de Montecristi," with free admission for all, covers the period from the earliest geology up to this time of the official Founding of the town. Exhibits show the culture of the original Tainos, and the artifacts from the many shipwrecks in the area show the trade goods and lifestyle of the early settlers.

It names only two locations: "Natividad" (which means "the birth") and Montecristi, where he anchored for several days in 1493 after losing the Santa Maria on a shallow reef off the Haitian coast. It does not show La Isabela where he founded a settlement on his second voyage.

There is a range of low mountains along the Montecristi coast, ending with El Morro, and a network of lagoons with seven offshore cays. The coastal platform is extensive and fed by one of the country's largest rivers, so that sea life is abundant, and the cays and lagoons are nesting areas for seasonally migrating birds.
