After a quiet spell, the Blog continues with a selection of shore birds observed recently along the Monterey Bay shore at the Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove, CA. Photographs from throughout Monterey County. Friday, February 8, 2013. Moss Landing, Jetty Road. On Thursday February 1, 2013 we traveled to Moss Landing to see what we could see. It had been a while since we checked out the Jetty Road area. We used a Nikon D7000 with the Nikon 500mm f4.0 lens with 1.4 teleconverter for all these shots. First we saw a pair of these first year Buffleheads close to the road. The adults were too far away to get any kind of useful shot. There were several Willets nearby.

Photographs from throughout Monterey County. Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Black Oystercatcher Feeding a Chick. You can refer back to three Blogs from July 2011 that show the nest area and the parents incubating their eggs. This location was on the beach below the nest rock, where this chick apparently had fallen while exploring the nest rock above. It is always fascinating to be able to closely watch the behavior of these marine mammals in their own environment - one of the benefits of living so close to Monterey Bay. The first catch we observed by the Sea Otter was a red crab which she attacked by first removing the large claws. Note her damaged nose as well as the bite marks on her muzzle. We have been keeping track of the development of the Black Oystercatcher nest and used a different camera, lens and tripod set-up this weekend.
