Montmartin-en-Graignes vient du mot "mont", le bourg étant situé sur une colline avec un altitude de 33m et du Saint Martin. La cité s'est appelée Monte Martini en 1248 et Mons Martini en 1258. De 1793 à 1801, Montmartin est chef-lieu de canton. Jusqu'en 1801, la commune se nomme Montmartin. À cette date, lui est rajouté le suffixe : en-Graignes. Libération en juin 1944.
