Lazy Luddite Log: September 2006

There is nothing much I can think of to post just now so here is a link to something that will interest all my fellow starship design geeks out there: Starship Dimensions. Marvel at all the cool spaceships you have come to know and love as you look at them compared to one another and to scale. Sometimes the relative sizes are a bit disconcerting and challenge assumptions formed from watching movies and programs. Sometimes they are just cool to look at. Have fun. Are also mnemonics - concepts that assist in the remembering of more complex concepts. The slogan 'Which Bank? Reminds millions of Australians that the Commonwealth Bank is. The best bank to go to. Here is a memory exercise given to school children to hopefully help them be safer and more self-assured:. I wonder if this may be a useful exercise for adults also. Posted by Daniel at 28.4.06. Memes nothing to me. I always wanted to say. One such meme asks writers to think of ten people in their personal lif...

This short story was written some time ago but was only recently published in the South Eastern Science Fiction Club (SESFC) newszine 'Diverse Visions'. I think that it is best imagined as an anime. You will be happy to note that this time the story has an ending. Jasmin looked out her bedroom window towards the national park hanging there in the sky. The Earth. She would be there tomorrow with her classmates for the most exciting school excursion of her life. Jasmin smiled at her mechanical companion an...

There are things I want to do at some time with this blog but they may still be sometime off. I find "getting around to it" always takes time. More specifically if it is something new or different or fiddly then it will take ages for me to get the whatever-it-takes together to do it. Another thing I want to do is interview my parents and provide transcriptions of those interviews on-line. Why? Posted by Daniel at 25.7.06. Chisholm (Federal House of Representatives). It will be much less likely over time ...

Lazy Luddite Log: August 2006

I have chanced to be in a number of conversations recently on the topic of ethics and this has got me wondering at the origin of moral behaviour. Also a number of incidents that I have become aware of have likewise got me thinking on the applicability of particular kinds of morality. The comments that follow are hardly original but just map my own personal exploration of the topic of late. From whence do morals arise? Many advocates of religious morality refer to 'nature' as the source of moral behaviour.

So here it is: Musical Genres 1955-2005. I put it there with some trepidation. It has its flaws. Some of its assertions can be contested. Some of its terminology is unusual. And some of its phrasing is a tad mechanical. Still I think it's worth putting there and it may be interesting or informative to some. A decade following this entry I have written a reflection on it and what has changed since. See it here. Labels: Music Related Stuff. Posted by Daniel at 23.2.06. Student groups seemed a bit more push...

Australia Day Long Weekend. Just to make fun of the person among us who is vegan. Of its applications is the production of cocaine. By the last day we were all annoying each other a bit and it was nice to get back home. Also I missed what was reportedly an excellent party (the right size for vibrant conversation). But all in all it was a fantastic weekend and very much a needed thing. Posted by Daniel at 30.1.06. Bohemian Rhapsody versus the Evie Trilogy. Why compare these two tracks in particular? It he...

As Maria von Trapp says "these are a few of my favourite things.". I see a lot of movies now that I live close to a cinema that gets movies later than national opening date and charges less for tickets as a result. Even visiting the cinemas alone is a fun way of passing the time. My favourites indicates a preference for effects flicks but I do enjoy other kinds of movies too. honest. I love the new live-action movie. But for me the original animated flick is still the best. The live-action film g...A hav...

I have been looking over saved messages in my yahoo account and coming across old 'signature' quotes I had appended to my messages in the past. Now (ever since I got this blog) my sig is simply a link to Lazy Luddite Log but before that I would have quotes at the end of my messages and only change the quote every several months. For interest sake I will put all those past sig quotes here. I don't know what it is I'm looking for. And until it's found I won't be sure. From 'On the Shoreline' by Genesis.
