James Halliday says that Moody’s Shiraz has good cool grown characteristics, its fresh cherry fruit dusted with spice and pepper . The 2015 vintage shows these characteristics, and is a warm and fresh drink that shows promise for good cellaring. It will cellar well. In the meantime it is very drinkable, especially with lamb and Italian food. The winemaker was Chris Derrez of Orange, as usual! 2016 Rosé on sale now!

In this testing highland climate, with very variable seasons, each vintage has been distinctly different. The 2003 and 2004. Were made by Phil Stevenson of Ibis Wines, and Chris Derrez. Has made the later vintages. The first vintage was in 2003. Wines from France, the Hunter and Spain. In 2013 we made a Rosé from the Shiraz, and this is proving popular at the cellar door.

At university I got a degree in Geography, but the last thing I wanted to do was become a geography teacher, so I stayed on to learn agricultural economics, because I wanted to enter the overseas development effort. My first job was with the Tanzanian Ministry of Agriculture, “advising” (at the tender inexperienced age of 24) poor Tanzanians on how to grow cotton, tea, coffee, tobacco and maize.

The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc follows on from the 2012, which James Halliday judged a gold at 94, with its seductive mix of tropical and citrus fruit flavours, and with a fresh and clean bouquet. The 2013 has now sold out, but the 2014 is a worthy successor, despite a horror season of frost, hail, heat, drought and wretched starlings at the end.
