Midwest bound for Memorial Day. One of my best friends from college is getting married this weekend in Okoboji, IA. One may ask, how do you get there from Boston? 1 Take the subway to Logan airport at 6:30 AM. 2 Hop a flight to O'Hare in Chicago. 3 Airport Starbucks layover. 4 Board a puddle jumper to take you to Sioux Falls, SD (the closest airport to Iowa's Great Lakes). 6 arrive in Spencer, IA for the wedding rehearsal and barbecue. Celebrate. Canto para matar una culebra. Con sus ojos do vidrio.

While listening to WGBH classical this afternoon I heard a symphonic version of Guillen's poem "Sensemaya" by Mexican composer Sylvestre Revueltas. It was powerful with large walls of sound - all for a snake. But in my heart of hearts, I still wished they were playing Inti-Illimani's version instead. Canto para matar una culebra. La culebra tiene los ojos de vidrio. La culebra viene y se enreda en un palo. Con sus ojos de vidrio, en un palo. Con sus ojos do vidrio. La culebra camina sin patas.

Lots of Days at Home. So maybe that last post was a little whiny. In truth, a lot happened in October and November. A lot of really wonderful things! Three concerts, one fantastic vacation, terrific gatherings with friends, beautiful weather, prosperous job, budding music career, a loving and considerate partner. . .all of these. I know it's no longer 2007, I know that Ms. DVF does a swift business in jersey, but why was every female singer besides myself tonight wearing one? There were patterns, jewel tones, all black, jersey, cotton, too much cleavage, stockings, no stockings. So what's the deal? But while we may sing the same songs, must we all wear the same outfit? Just One Night at Home. This week and others ahead are filled with concerts and teaching - all pretty darn exciting - but they make me reminisce on just a few short weeks ago when it was still summer and I could sit leisurely after work on the couch to decompress and cook a delicious dinner that we'd eat on the back patio.
