For several months after Valkyrie joined our family, I didn't really feel like a mother. It just took a while to sink in. I told one coworker at the time that sometimes it felt like we had a tiny, demanding houseguest. When people on the Metro asked if she was my daughter, I would say yes and then immediately explain - to total strangers!
