http://skepticalascent.blogspot.com/2016/01/abide-with-me.html
Meet Anna M. Bowen. There's a lovely song. Often sung at church, referencing when Jesus is talking to some disciples and they ask him to stay the evening with them ( Luke 24:29. Fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens. Lord, with me abide! When I used to get depressed, as a believing and trying-my-hardest Mormon, I would feel racked with torment. Oh you maggots, you worms, how you ought to tremble before the glance of God's all-seeing Eye! My own paraphrase). I ask you, how is a person to achie...

Not converted to atheism, no, but also not offended by my new secular opinions. They didn't want to rain on my parade, which was kind, but they left the impression that some dark, stormy clouds were looming not too far away. That's the tricky thing about parades, though, they tend to be Loud and ...

Meet Anna M. Bowen. Well, I have struggled with this week's " Triple Combination Review. And the movie that was giving me so much trouble to contemplate from three viewpoints, trouble enough to try to make sense of from a single viewpoint? 2015) I saw this in theater in August, because it was important to my Dad that I go see it, because he was really moved by it and really struggling with how to talk to me about my sudden declaration of a lack of faith. The man was a frickin' police officer, pardon the ...

Skeptical Ascent: TCR: Chocolat
http://skepticalascent.blogspot.com/2015/12/tcr-chocolat.html
Meet Anna M. Bowen. 2000, directed: Lasse Hallström. This movie is like a fairy-tale: full of overblown characters, unrealistic happenings, and a sense of fate or a curse driving the protagonist. Basic plot: a single mom and her daughter arrive in a remote French village to set up a chocolate shop, right during Lent. She is immediately seen by the pious Mayor as a threat to the morality of the town, especially when she harbors a drifter (Johnny Depp). And now, on to the reviews! Check out the intro post.
