Bob's Blog Musings, Reflections, and Invitations: April 2010

Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Thursday, April 8, 2010. The Journey With Jesus. I decided back in January to spend a year with Jesus. Reading a chapter a day in the Gospels, I could read all four Gospels four times in one year – actually, 356 days if I don’t miss any. I am on my second pass through and it has been an interesting journey. Of what you have? Isn’t that just like God? The first pass through I read from the New International Version. This quarter I am in The Message. Here’s what...

Bob's Blog Musings, Reflections, and Invitations: May 2010
http://firstbaptistrolla.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Friday, May 14, 2010. It has been a while since I have written a blog. There are lots of reasons – a busy schedule, days that rushed by, distractions and preoccupations, stress, two sermons and a Bible study every week, fatigue. But the most honest reason – I lacked the words. I am in Arizona visiting my daughter and son-in-law, taking a vacation, goofing off. And thinking about words. Scholar Thomas Long says sometimes words are just. Words, He never. You will find...

Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Friday, June 24, 2011. If anything merits a blog it is the birth of a grandchild. Hudson Christopher Johns was born on June 15th to my daughter Alyssa and son-in-law Paul. Holly and I wasted very little time jumping a flight to Arizona. It has been an amazing week, and I find it difficult to voice what it feels like to be a grandparent – as so many of you told me, there is nothing quite like it. Is he eating enough? Why is he crying? June 25, 2011 at 7:52 AM. CTJ...

Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Friday, March 11, 2011. 8220;Did I really live my life or was it lived for me? Did I really make the decisions that led me to this place at this time, or was I simply carried along by the stream, by sad as well as happy events? 8220;I wonder if I really have listened carefully enough to the God of history, the God of my. History, and have recognized him when he called me by my name, broke the bread, or asked me to cast out my nets after a fruitless day?

Bob's Blog Musings, Reflections, and Invitations: Passion Sunday
http://firstbaptistrolla.blogspot.com/2011/04/passion-sunday.html
Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Sunday, April 17, 2011. The Sunday before Easter is known both as Palm Sunday and as Passion Sunday. Over the years our worship service on this Sunday at First Baptist tends to move from the joyful triumphal entry to the passion reflected on the cross. Such was the case in the message I preached today. I shared a brief bit of prose entitled “Friday” from Calvin Miller’s The Book of Jesus. On with Friday's grisly business! Let the broad arm raise the sledge! So many ...

Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Friday, January 28, 2011. There were other tax collectors who manifest great transformations, the most famous being Zacchaeus in Luke 19. Once living only for himself, Zacchaeus was transformed into a generous man, suddenly aware of the injuries he had caused and determined to do something about it. The change in his life was apparent to all. I wonder, if a sculpture was made of you, what would your foot be on? What would be in your hands? I ask the same of myself.

Bob's Blog Musings, Reflections, and Invitations: There's No Place Like Home
http://firstbaptistrolla.blogspot.com/2011/02/theres-no-place-like-home.html
Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Sunday, February 20, 2011. There's No Place Like Home. First Baptist Church of Rolla enjoys our connections with internationals and we try to give them a taste of life in America. Someone came up with the idea that we ought to show them a classic film – one that had stood the test of time. We decided to show them The Wizard of Oz. Best of all, He has a better place waiting for us than Kansas or Oz. There's no place like the home God has for us. Life at the Altar.

Musings, Reflections, and Invitations. Wednesday, June 23, 2010. The Sparrow At My Window. Once again today I was in my office and heard the chirping of a sparrow right outside my window. As it sat on the window ledge, I had the opportunity to observe the bird, to see its alertness, its vigilance. If I looked closely, I almost believed I could see the beating of its heart as it rested from its flight. What’s the point? And He wants to do more than just watch us – His longing is to walk with us thro...
