Il suo nome deriva da un’antichissima corsa di cavalieri che si disputava sulla via che conduce dall’odierna Locanda all’antico castello militare. La mossa nel dialetto toscano significa un movimento brusco e repentino, come è appunto lo scatto scatto del cavallo alla partenza, infatti chi è alla partenza di antiche corse come il palio di Siena viene nominato Mossiere. I cavalli che partecipavano alla competizione erano di razza berbera, dal quale derivò in seguito il nome barbari.
