(Mostly) Free: I [Don't] Side With...

http://mostlyfree.blogspot.com/2015/03/i-dont-side-with.html

Tuesday, March 03, 2015. I [Don't] Side With. My top match is what makes the I Side With. Graphic, but it's not why I want to post this. I wanted to post this because of my 4th/5th best match: the Conservative Party of Canada (tied with the Bloc, outpacing the Greens, Communists, and Christian Heritage Party). Other classically liberal friends are posting similar results. There's room to work together. 1990s Canadian Conservatives (and the federal Liberals) focused on issues libertarians care about (debt...

(Mostly) Free: Earth Hour, washing machines, and fighting poverty

http://mostlyfree.blogspot.com/2015/03/earth-hour-washing-machines-and.html

Monday, March 30, 2015. Earth Hour, washing machines, and fighting poverty. I missed Earth Hour this past weekend. I meant to share Hans Rosling's magic washing machine to mark the occasion. We must remember the incredible, liberating power that electricity has. While we should try to find more efficient ways to use and produce it, our time would be best spent thinking of the truly poor and of how to expand electricity use around the globe, rather than playing at poverty. Thursday, August 06, 2015. More on modern-day fascism. People who liked my post about the current popularity of many of the tenents of fascism in mainstream politics are likely to enjoy Steve Hortwitz's latest column at The Freeman about why politicians are making us use 'the F-word' so much these days. An excerpt:. So what does this have to do with Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump? Read it all here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. The Institute for Liberal Studies. (Mostly) Free: What do the NSA and the Ithaca College Student Government Association have in common?

http://mostlyfree.blogspot.com/2015/03/what-do-nsa-and-ithaca-college-student.html

Saturday, March 28, 2015. What do the NSA and the Ithaca College Student Government Association have in common? Edward Snowden blew the whistle on NSA spying in part because of his belief that the ability to speak freely and explore ideas is crucial to becoming the person that you want to be - and had allowed him to become the person he wanted to be. He believes that NSA spying ( in addition to being illegal, immoral, and having the potential to start accidental wars. KAITLYN KELLY/ THE ITHACAN. She said...

(Mostly) Free: A negative vote for affirmative action.

http://mostlyfree.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-negative-on-affirmative-action.html

Saturday, February 21, 2015. A negative vote for affirmative action. Arguments for libertarians to embrace the feminist position. The qualms we have with socialist feminism are with its socialism, not its feminism. Alas, the discourse between left-feminists and liberals is not as developed as the discourse that we have with 'the right'. But what if your main concern isn't the presence of any. Injustice, but the correction a specific. Happily, this sort of thing motivates better thinking. Let’s assu...

The Calvinball Diaries: It's not a surplus...

http://mattbufton.blogspot.com/2007/09/its-not-surplus.html

Hey, you, get off of my cloud. Thursday, September 06, 2007. It's not a surplus. Politics is as much about winning the war of semantics as fighting on the actual issues, how successful would the pro-choice movement be if their opponents had been successful in labeling them the pro-baby killers? So as our federal government announces its tenth (give or take) annual surplus I call on everybody out there to start calling it what it is, an overtaxation. Posted by Matt at 9:54 PM. The Calvinball Diaries: Looks like we can afford those tax cuts...

http://mattbufton.blogspot.com/2007/09/looks-like-we-can-afford-those-tax-cuts.html

Hey, you, get off of my cloud. Thursday, September 27, 2007. Looks like we can afford those tax cuts. Well, well, it looks like we ended up with about $14 billion in loose change behind the sofa cushions for the last fiscal year. By my reckoning we could have afforded that second GST reduction, a return to the lower incomes tax rates enacted in 2005 and a business tax cut too. Posted by Matt at 6:50 PM. September 27, 2007 8:15 PM. It's true, $30-40 is really chump change. But at least it's something.

The Calvinball Diaries: July 2007

http://mattbufton.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Hey, you, get off of my cloud. Tuesday, July 31, 2007. The CMA Gets it Right. The goal of all Canadian governments should be to see that everyone has access to health care; this can be achieved by paying for the care of those who can't afford it. Owning hospitals, employing doctors and nurses, banning health insurance and preventing doctors from working both publicly and privately are all measures that are not only unrelated to this goal, they seem to be preventing us from reaching it. Its not a surplus.

The Calvinball Diaries: On Income Trusts and Corporate Taxes

http://mattbufton.blogspot.com/2007/05/on-income-trusts-and-corporate-taxes.html

Hey, you, get off of my cloud. Thursday, May 31, 2007. On Income Trusts and Corporate Taxes. Turns out there are still a few writers over at the Mop and Pail with their heads screwed on right. In fact, Derek Decloet not only writes a good article. He also manages to offer up the kind of bold policy Canada's new government should be pushing in just one sentence:. Then let's cut the corporate rate to 10 per cent, and watch as Toronto becomes a magnet for head offices.". How about it guys? What do Ted Byfie...
