The Motley Yule: November 2011
http://motleyyule.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Comments on the business of Christmas and marketing the winter holidays. Friday, November 25, 2011. The Motley Yule Returns. For most reporters, weather stories are the only assignments that are more dreaded than holiday stories. But I always enjoyed the challenge of finding quirky holiday angles. In the Thanksgiving day edition of the Washington Post. 18 years ago, I wrote about the violent demise of a rafter of pardoned presidential turkeys. Well, now that retailers are embracing social media to provid...
The Motley Yule: December 2007

Comments on the business of Christmas and marketing the winter holidays. Tuesday, December 25, 2007. Having dedicated this blog to documenting a bit of the commercial hubbub around the Christmas season, it seems appropriate to welcome the actual holiday this year with a few words from Dr. Seuss' "How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The 1966 TV version of which we watched this very afternoon with our nephews. Labels: Dr. Seuss. Monday, December 24, 2007. Lights, Camera. . . In a minute and a half. One major c...

Comments on the business of Christmas and marketing the winter holidays. Tuesday, November 27, 2007. Carol of the Ads. There it is again! DA DA dada DA DA - Ok, enough already! No wonder the repetitive, catchy melody of "Carol of the Bells". Is stuck in my head. I seem hear it every time I turn on the TV these days. There's a choir singing it - using "duhs" instead of "das" - to promote Hyundai's cars. Give-a give-a give-a Garmin! Or "I don't know; holiday shopping? Or some brand of wine? No, not any pro...
The Motley Yule: January 2008
http://motleyyule.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html
Comments on the business of Christmas and marketing the winter holidays. Saturday, January 26, 2008. Tis Not the Season. A wall of Valentine's Day candy greeted me at the grocery store the other day. I started to think through a possible item for this blog on how it is we have come to celebrate a couple of early Christian martyrs and earlier fertility rituals. With candy and racy greeting cards. But then I realized that this would be scope creep for a blog whose focus. Was and should remain Christmas.

Friday, February 11, 2011. I suppose it's not what most seek or celebrate on Valentine's Day. I cherish it lately, though. I am glad to not be bothered with the bustle of it all this February. No notes to buy, no chocolates ruin my Spring 2010 wardrobe reuse. Better still, I am happy to be sans the wishing/wanting/waiting/will he/won't he part of an uncertain pre-Valentine's involvement. The fact that lack of or the wrong Valentine makes some people feel horrible or pressured bothers me though. I mean re...
