Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever: Lesson 1: It's always play time
http://lessonsfrombuddy.blogspot.com/2013/01/lesson-1-its-always-playtime.html
Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Lesson 1: It's always play time. Buddy is psycho about playing ball; he always has been. There’s scarcely a time when he doesn’t have one or more of his collection of balls within reach, and he’s always quick to grab one up when given the slightest encouragement. Over the years he’s gathered quite a collection of different sizes and colors and textures of balls, and he works his way through them all. I watch him and realize that wha...

Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever: Lesson 5: Grow old gracefully
http://lessonsfrombuddy.blogspot.com/2013/01/lesson-5-grow-old-gracefully.html
Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Lesson 5: Grow old gracefully. I've been going through all the old photos that I've taken of our dogs over the last 27 years, and I'm amazed at the lives and stories that each animal went through. In looking at a certain image, I'm taken back immediately to that moment, and Joe and I sit here laughing and crying at all the wondrous, silly or sad moments. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Of malignant cells or disease-producing. To spread to other parts of the body by way of the blood or lymphatic vessels or membranous surfaces. This is the word that came into my vocabulary last week in a very personal way when my Golden Retriever, Buddy, was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, a large, malignant tumor on his spleen which had metastasized to his liver. However, it seemed that the bleeding had stopped temporarily. Needles...

Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever: Lesson 10: Stay in the moment
http://lessonsfrombuddy.blogspot.com/2013/02/lesson-10-stay-in-moment.html
Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Lesson 10: Stay in the moment. It's now been a little more than two weeks since Buddy's surgery. Looking at him, you'd never know that he'd just undergone major surgery taking out his spleen and removing a large malignant growth. He was weak and guarded in the beginning when he came home. But, my boy, Buddy, I think you've taught me the most of all. Thank you. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Lesson 1: Its always play time.

Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever: Lesson 8: Always make a good first impression
http://lessonsfrombuddy.blogspot.com/2013/01/lesson-8-always-make-good-first.html
Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Lesson 8: Always make a good first impression. When we heard that Buddy was available for adoption, he was eight and a half weeks old. He and his sister were the only ones left out of a litter of 12. They were both so adorable as only puppies can be - especially if they're Golden Retrievers. They both looked great. The final decision was going to depend on their personalities. Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Lesson 3: Reach out and touch someone. Several years ago my partner, Joe, spent six months in a nursing home learning to walk again after a hemorrhage damaged the nerves in his spine and he became paralyzed from the waist down. During this time we got to see how people exist in these homes. Joe was lucky to leave and get well, but that’s not the case for most of the people we got to know. Watching the face of this lucky recipient, s...

Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Lesson 2: Be creative. Talking about Buddy and his balls, I am constantly amazed by the games he’s invented. Buddy believes that you should be able to do something with a ball no matter where you are. He’s invented games for every room in the house that take on new twists and turns over the years. If you’re sitting on the pot, there’s one game of “drop and roll the ball"; i. This is what the game has evolved into over the years:.

Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever: Lesson 4: The Art of Being
http://lessonsfrombuddy.blogspot.com/2013/01/lesson-4-art-of-being.html
Lessons about Life from a Golden Retriever. Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Lesson 4: The Art of Being. One of my biggest life lessons came not from Buddy, but from my first male Golden, Teddy. During the time we had Teddy, I was working hard at a very demanding job that meant there was always work I had to bring home along with everything else life brings. Teddy had this way of knowing when I needed a break. He’d set himself down in front of me and give me this look that meant it was time for a change.
