A wonderful playground with something for everyone from novice to hard man. Fantastic climbing, scenery and positions. I had the priviledge to guide here for 16 seasons. Above - On the descent from Jebel Rum, Wadi Rum, Jordan. The local Bedouin had climbed many of the peaks, barefoot and with no equipment, some of these are serious with complex route finding. Apart from T E Lawrence's visit, the area was little known until the visit of Tony Howard in 1984.

I started climbing in the era before harnesses, before belay devices, before chalk, before E numbers, when nuts were just that, machine nuts threaded on rope slings. I have always preferrred "adventure climbing". Top left - "Strapiombante" E1, Froggatt Edge, Peak District. Top right - Gogarth was always one of my favorite cliffs, I climbed over a hundred routes here. Here I'm starting "The Ramp" on the Upper Tier, one of the easier routes at Gogarth.

Wales, Scotland and the Alps were my favourite places for ice climbing. I lived within walking distance of Ysgolian Ddu (the Black Ladders) a superb winter crag when in condition. At other times I climbed in the Dauphine with its superb steep frozen icefalls very often with safe bolt belay stations. Top left. In my opion the best route on Ysgolian Ddu, "ArticFox/Ypres" combination. Top right. The stunning free-standing icicle that is "Doigt d'Astarothe" in the La Grave valley.
