EARLY TENANTS AND GUESTS AT MOUNT MERRION LODGE. We know that the first wing of Mount Merrion Lodge was built in 1711. During that year the Stable Block and the Farmyard was also built. However, Richard the 5th Viscount Fitzwilliam really wanted to pursue a serious career in politics. The Agent was instructed to prepare the Lodge for Rental and to procure distinguished tenants. A FAIRY PALACE IS BORN. Sir Nevile had already created a miniature mansion known as Pembroke Palace which was opened for exhibition by Queen Alexandra in 1908 in Wilton House. Pembroke Palace is a large dolls house six feet ten and a half inches long, four feet one inch high and two and a half feet deep on three floors. From Barn Dances to Rock and Roll. The first section formed was table tennis with Hugh Devine as chairman. This group competed in the Dublin Leagues and won many cups. I remember The Behans from Priory were great players; James Behan was later manager of the Adelphi Cinema in Abbey St. A Mrs Walsh Chaired the debating section and we held a schools debating competition each year with schools from all over Dublin taking part. THE LODGE IN THE EARLY 1900'S. Sir Nevile and his family occupied Mount Merrion House for at least ten years until World War I. A special mention will have to be made of the agents of the Fitzwilliam and Pembroke families who worked tirelessly for many years. They were Mr. Cornelius Sullivan, Mr. Edward Vernon, his son Fane and grandson, Henry.
