Astbury Lime Works

More Coal History Pics. The Tunnel after Capping. Before you begin to read this article, you may wish to familiarise yourself with the 1908 map. Lime has been quarried out of this area for at lease 300 years, and some have suggested and with good cause that the Romans quarried lime here. The Romans has a camp nearby in Astbury and a road system that passed very close in several directions, I am also informed that a small Roman lamp was once found in the area of the works. 17th Century Powder Hut. All the...
Brick Works

Brick Works (Marl Hole). Three men and a Truck. Unfortunately to date I only have a small amount of information on Mow Cop Brickworks. If anyone out there can shed any further light on the subject, I would love to hear from you. Most of the images and information on this page is taken from the book The Old Man of Mow published by collins. An oven would hold 30 000 bricks at a time and would use 10 tons of coal. They would then be fired for 3 days at 950°C and cooled for 2 days.
Shops

A while ago I decided to write a new chapter on the site about the shops on Mow Cop, I can personally remember a few more than today especially in Mount Pleasant where I spent most Saturdays at my Gran`s. Derek however can remember quite a few more and has sent me quite a list to keep me going. Don`t eat Ingham`s bread,. It makes you s* t like lead,. No bloody wonder,. You f* t like thunder,. Don`t eat Ingham`s bread. Then she`d come out and run us with her poker!
Fustian
http://www.mowcop.info/htm/industry/fustian.htm
Inside Mount Pleasant Mill. Fustian is a type of cloth that is believed to have originated in 2. Century AD Egypt, at a place called Fustat. All different types of Fustian are constructed or cut in the same manner. A basic woven cloth had extra wefts sewn in as it was made, then the Fustian cutters would take a long sharp knife like instrument and walk the length of the cloth, cutting the extra wefts so that they formed a pile. Velveteen and corduroy were both made this way. Towards the end of the 19.
