뇌졸중이란 뇌에 필요한 영양과 혈액을 공급하고 있는 핏줄(혈관)이 갑자기 막히거나(뇌경색) 터져서(뇌출혈) 정상적으로 혈액의 공급을 받지 못하게 된 뇌조직이 손상되면서 해당 부위의 뇌신경마비증상이 발생하는 뇌혈관질환을 총칭하여 말한다. 영어로는 cerbrovascular disease, cerebrovascular accident 혹은 stroke 이라고 부르며, 한자로 는 ‘뇌졸중(腦’卒中)’, 즉 ‘뇌가 갑자기 당한다’ 라고 표현하는데 이는 뇌졸중이 일어나면 뇌혈관질환으로 인하여 뇌마비증상이 갑자기 발생한다는 뜻이다. 순수한 우리말로는 바람을 맞다 라고 표현되는데, 이는 한자의 중풍(中風)이라는 뜻과 같다.
