Closed-Loop Drilling Versus Open-to-Atmosphere Drilling. MPD enhances well integrity by creating a secure closed-loop drilling system. The rotating control device (RCD) integrates into a standard riser system, caps the well, and diverts all returns to the MPD choke manifold. The manifold allows for precision pressure management by applying pressure from the surface. The Microflux control system allows real-time downhole monitoring.

North Sea well reached TD 75 days early, saved $26 million. An offset well in a severely depleted North Sea reservoir presented a narrow drilling window with high temperatures, nuisance gas zones, and a cap rock close to virgin pressure up to 1,000 bar (14504 psi). MPD removed the risk from the project and reached total depth (TD) 75 days earlier than the authorized-for-expenditure (AFE) target, which saved more than $26 million in rig costs.

The operation increased average rate-of-penetration (ROP) from 15 to 20 ft/hr (4.6 to 6.1 m/hr) to 40 to 50 ft/hr (12.2 to 15.2 m/hr) while also reducing mud weight from 16.5 to 14.8 ppg. The MPD program saved the operator $2 million in rig time and operating costs.
