当時は、電話と電話の間に 交換手 という人がいて、交換手が相手に電話ををつなげてくれる事によって相手と話す 電話 することが出来たのです。 電話機の受話器を上げると交換手さんにつながり、 新宿の、 さんにつないで下さい と伝えると交換手さんが新宿の さんにつなぐといった仕組みになっているんです。 日本国内で初めて導入された自動交換機は、 ステップ バイ ステップ という方式でした。 ステップ バイ ステップ とは、ダイヤル式電話機からきたダイヤル番号に応じて、その数字の回線に接続して、最終的には空いての電話回線につながるという仕組みのことを言います。 次々に接続していく動作がステップと呼ばれて、 ステップ バイ ステップ交換機 という名前になったそうです。 小型化によって、従来あった場所は、空きスペースになり、現在はコロケーション 共同の設置場所 スペースとして、ADSLなどの戦記通信事業者 キャリヤ などに貸し出しをしているようです。
