Around 1955, Edward Bogard was cleaning out some storage rooms in Firestone's basement when he spotted some rags thrown over a 55-gal. drum. At closer inspection, one of the "rags" turned out to be the Army-Navy E flag. Ed took the flag to the office of Harvey Firestone Jr. and asked what they planned to do with it. "Throw it away!
