Warm rock, a roiling sea, and time for adventure
Mother Carey's Kitchen: July 2008
http://mrobards.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Warm rock, a roiling sea, and time for adventure. Monday, July 28, 2008. The Streets of New York. Everyday I try and rationalize these new surroundings, make sense of it all. It's exciting and disturbing in equal measure; an experience that feels important but one that is maybe more type II than type I fun. This guy was equal measure opera, irish jig, and something I can't put my finger on. Early morning on the walk between Penn Station and Central park. And trying to get it all in focus. And that has ma...

Warm rock, a roiling sea, and time for adventure. Thursday, September 04, 2008. Some questions you might ask. If you look carefully, you can find mama bear and a couple of baby bears. Elsewhere, were moose, caribou, wolves, and an endless line of beaver tracks. Some Questions You Might Ask. Is the soul solid, like iron? Or is it tender and breakable, like. The wings of a moth in the beak of an owl? Who has it, and who doesn't? I keep looking around me. The face of the moose is as sad. As the face of Jesus.
Mother Carey's Kitchen: October 2010
http://mrobards.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Warm rock, a roiling sea, and time for adventure. Saturday, October 30, 2010. Life, Death, and Renewal. River-born fugitives, red muscled under sheathing silver,. Alive with lights of ocean's changing colours,. The range of deeps and distances through wild salt years. Has gathered the sea's plenty into your. Fullness is the long return from dark depths. Rendering toll of itself to the searching nets. Strife on brilliant gravel shallows. That opened long ago behind the failing ice. Under the burn of fall,.
Mother Carey's Kitchen: June 2008
http://mrobards.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Warm rock, a roiling sea, and time for adventure. Saturday, June 07, 2008. The day seemed less than promising as we passed through hail and rain on the way north, but it turned out to be a stellar hike along the Pinnell Mountain Trail about 100 miles northeast of Fairbanks. And beauty is free. We can still walk. Our earth was once green. Tuesday, June 03, 2008. The Russians are Coming! Spring is hitting Nome after snows just a week ago. Musk ox are always a thrill. Who made the world? Tell me, what else ...
Mother Carey's Kitchen: April 2012
http://mrobards.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Warm rock, a roiling sea, and time for adventure. Tuesday, April 17, 2012. The Sound of Running Water. The sun was warm but the wind was chill. You know how it is with an April day. Perhaps the bears will come out soon and feed on the road-side grasses? The next day we hiked Donnelly Dome on baking tundra, welcoming the spring, and marveling at the wintery expanse of the Alaska Range. We keep each other alive with our stories. We need to share them, as much as we need to share food. We also requi...

Living it up in alaska. We started our hike up the summit trail from the Wickersham Dome trail head. The summit trail is in great shape. We hiked past the trail shelter at mile 8 until around mile 10.5 to start our bush whack to Eleazar's cabin in the White Mountains. We headed toward the cabin off the ridge and half way through we came to a nice clearing to get a view of our direction. The cabin is just beyond the hilltop directly behind Dan's head. CHST to Middle Fork Chena River. We had to bushwhack t...

Living it up in alaska. Ben and I had a fantastic short weekend trip to the Brooks Range. The Brooks Range is 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and around 300 miles north of Fairbanks. We stopped in Wiseman at Bernie and Uda's B&B to say hi to the winter classic guys too. Atigun Pass was so beautiful, Ben shot the 4x5 and I could not wait to get out the skis. Over the pass it was still winter at -12F, but sunny and no wind. Skiing early the next morning over Galbrith Lake and up the ridge.

Living it up in alaska. Colorado Creek Cabin (DNR). We were very cozy inside the Colorado Creek cabin, just a few over the max amount. It was no problem though because a snowcave was built and Ann slept in there. It was great ski into the cabin and only 6miles. On the way out we went up Compeau Trail to the ridge. Ben skiing on the way out. Trevor quickly skiing over the overflow we encountered. We only had to scrap the skis once though. Fernie in the snowcave with Ann. Christmas 2009 at home in Alaska.

Living it up in alaska. The girls at Kat's Thanksgiving dinner. Kat served up a great meal and everyone brought sides and wine. A few hilarious stories too, a good time was had by all. I have a cool purple cast for my broken wrist, but still have another ski trip planned. Ben and Galen toasting at scotch and socks night. A group of us met for Thanksgiving day ski. I skijored using a split skijor leash, Pella and Lucy. We still were no match for Sky and Ty, but we had a good ski chasing them. Dan made Ben...
huffblog: Moody Creek!
http://huffblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/moody-creek.html
Living it up in alaska. The hike to packraft Moody Creek starts at the Dragon Fly drainage at mile 273. Trevor, Ed, Ann, Shook and I started trip two of the kidney reunion packraft tour straight up to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain and off the back side. Tbone, not texting :). We arrive at Moody Creek, excited to get on this new unscouted river. One of many fun manoeuvers through a solid class three river. Ann (a.k.a. Scout), famously said just go ahead it looks good. Trevor headed through a rocky set.

Living it up in alaska. The hike up from Cathedral Rapids near Tok was beautiful. We were able to hike straight up the drainage to the start of the climb and there was one waterfall after another. The climb up the pass was relativity short and ended just below snow line. We had a few solid sheep trails that made for easy climbing on and off. The pass was guarded by the sheep. The next morning we floated the fast, fun and braided Roberton River 25 miles back to the bridge. Looks like another fun adventure.

Living it up in alaska. 1 year kidney transplant anniversary at Mayo! Ben and I are at Mayo this week for my 1 year kidney transplant anniversary! It has been an amazing year and hard to sum up in one blog post. The biopsy is over, and all of the other major testing this week, Ben, our families and friends have been super supportive throughout. Ben also did a charity photo auction. Trevor and I about 2 months after the kidney transplant - dubbed "the big hairy man kidney". It was my first 50k ski race so...

Behind closed doors
A glimpse at the thought life and life experiences of Robert Byron Baer III. Saturday, April 11, 2015. Living or Surviving: Pt 2 (Son or Servant). In the previous post I revealed my thought process regarding the difficulty I was experiencing in the workforce. For me, it boiled down to trying to serve two masters. A couple of nights ago, on my way home from work, Holy Spirit brought a passage to mind:. Saturday, January 17, 2015. How do we get money? Most of us work for it. Some inherit it. Maybe ...Just ...

mrobaposh | The greatest WordPress.com site in all the land!
The greatest WordPress.com site in all the land! When saying no is saying yes. After 75 minutes of delicious, sweaty hot yoga, our instructor cued us to bring our hands to third-eye center and bow forward. This is the way class is usually closed. However today, this instructor took it to another level:. This is the greatest act of submission the head bowing to the heart, saying you are greater than me. This last week on prioritizing student needs. I have lived by this motto since I began teaching. Still ...
