Unconventional Fire: November 2016
http://unconventionalfire.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 17, 2016. My Inspiration- Teacher Appreciation Week. I've written briefly about this in the past, but in light of getting some nice notes, emails, gifts and shout-outs on Twitter from several students and parents, I thought I'd share a little something about a teacher I appreciated, who quite literally altered the course of my life for the better, and probably as much as anyone in my life, made me into the person and teacher that I am today. Ed Cameron, I'm sorry my life took me away a...

Coulda Woulda Shoulda | Life is More Than Theory
https://lifemorethantheory.wordpress.com/2014/05/29/coulda-woulda-shoulda
Life is More Than Theory. Doing is learning. Learning is living. I had the opportunity to discuss the idea of Flipping yesterday – I was conscripted for the assignment – and was both terrified and excited. My plan started with a PollEverywhere multiple choice question asking the participants if flipping was new, if they’d heard of it, or if they equated it with videos. From there, I’d begin my spiel focusing adding/deleting to what I’d say based on the numbers from the poll. Definition of ‘flipping...

Playing with Chemicals | Life is More Than Theory
https://lifemorethantheory.wordpress.com/2013/09/02/playing-with-chemicals
Life is More Than Theory. Doing is learning. Learning is living. Data requirements for lab. This week, I had the AP students do some very simple labs focused upon law of conservation of mass, but connecting it to stoichiometry. Students mixed a white powder with a liquid to produce a gaseous product (massing beakers initially, with and after, see image at right), share their data on the board, then graph the class data on a TI calculator (see image below). Mass) and the mass of the solid? What the ideal ...

Unconventional Fire: November 2014
http://unconventionalfire.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 21, 2014. What I am about to say is semi-heretic in some of the circles I float around in online and on twitter, and to some small degree, even at my amazing school. I like to lecture. I'll compound my blasphemy with the comment that. I'm pretty good at it. This came up to me because while I run full flipped Chemistry I class and for the most part flipped intro to Organic class, I do a lot less in my AP class and sometimes I lecture for a bit in my organic class. Or that every student le...

Unconventional Fire: It Begins Again
http://unconventionalfire.blogspot.com/2016/08/it-begins-again.html
Sunday, August 14, 2016. I sort of made myself a promise this year that I'd try to be a bit more reflective on a regular basis. For a lot of teachers that means blogging everyday, which would be amazing, some year I will aspire to that, but it won't be this year. My goal is to do so at least once a week though and since the first week of school just finished, I better get to work or I'm already behind. To be clear, the 7 courses thing was entirely my idea, but that was when I thought I'd have no brand ne...

Unconventional Fire: August 2013
http://unconventionalfire.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 11, 2013. Confession time here, which will no doubt shock no one. I played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons in Middle/High School and College. At the very least, my nerd/geek cred should be boosted a lot by this fact. As I prep for the new year I was drawing some serious parallels between DMing and being a teacher, particularly with regards to some methodology behind both things. Another type of DM can be best described as an oppositional DM. See this Penny Arcade strip. I'm an urban school t...

Unconventional Fire: Summer Reflections part 4- Scheduling
http://unconventionalfire.blogspot.com/2016/07/summer-reflections-part-4-scheduling.html
Saturday, July 9, 2016. Summer Reflections part 4- Scheduling. Let me outline the schedule. We are an alternate day block schedule Tuesday through Friday that means that:. On T/R we have "L" day classes. On W/F we have N day classes. That means 8 classes in that time frame of those 4 days of the week, meeting twice in that time for about 82 minutes each class session. Most students have 2-3 of these "labs" (yes, quotes, because that isn't what labs should be in my science brain! View my complete profile.

Let's make learning meaningful. Friday, December 2, 2016. Less clutter and more interesting. Today is an end of the trimester work day. On my to-do list I set aside some time to make my classroom less cluttered with stuff kids don't actually look at and to have more creative visual examples of what we actually do in math class. There is also a shout-out to one of my favorite shows, Lost, as a metaphor for our standards based learning cycle. Standards based grading and student reflection visual. In the sl...
