I first used this traditional practice as a way to work with my students to show all the foundational skills needed to compose a complete drawing. In doing this I was aware of the many strong drawings produced by artists over the past century which used skills that were hundreds of years old but also managed to present a very contemporary image. Endlessly engaging, still life drawing and painting will always be part of the studio routine for me. 9 1/4 x 9 3/4. 10 x 10 1/2. 7 1/2 x 9. 9 1/2 x 71/2.

Field Drawings are made by a combination of ‘being there’ and making the drawing in one or two sittings, sketching the forms and also photographing them when presence at the site is problematic. After doing field drawings over the years, I see life forms as eloquent evidence of the creative force found in all things alive. Smooth stones began to find their way into my still life drawings as secondary elements within the composition. I tried a couple of drawings where only stones were placed as a ‘field’ to see if they held up as a complete subject when viewed from above. Then I saw that the stones could be arranged and illuminated in various ways that allowed them to become expressive elements working toward a cohesive whole. 11 1/2 x 9. Charcoal on laid paper. What is it about pumpkins and squashes? Well, they catch the light in a classical way; the elementary sphere and the order of light and shadow is always at hand with these forms. They show evidence of growth, are humorous and are integrated into our respective cultures as food, decorative objects and transient art forms. 14 1/2 x 14 1/2. 13 5/8 x 12 3/4.

This series resulted when the illustrative nature of combined still life objects overwhelmed the rationale of academic intentions. I went with it. What has resulted is a wonderful set of ‘tableaus’ that present some evocative situations, none of which have preconceived stories or propositions. Even though I title them in a suggestive way, it is the viewer who will make the final decisions here. Initiation, Still Life with Carved birds. Tinted charcoal on paper. 15 x 18 1/4.
