A Menagerie of Masks. December 5, 2011 at 8:00 am ( Japan. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Universe of The Legend of Zelda. Have you ever played Majora’s Mask. The second game in the Legend of Zelda. Franchise released for the Nintendo 64. Right, Majora’s Mask. If you have played it but never beat it, go do that now. I know some of the time loops can be frustrating, but it’s a good game! Ok, beaten it? Or at least wiki’d the synopsis? Old school Zelda style. It’s pretty cool and makes the s...Which, ...

Inari Shrines, Inari Spirits | My Yokai Monogatari

https://mshields67.wordpress.com/2011/11/20/foxes-feed-on-fried-food

Inari Shrines, Inari Spirits. November 20, 2011 at 8:00 am ( Japan. I love Japanese foxes. I have a kitsune tattoo, I have book after book of kitsune-related folkstories, my thesis was going to be solely on transforming foxes until I decided to study a wider range of yokai (still researched an awesome fox story). And when I go to shrines, I have an uncanny ability to hone in on the often small and out-of-the-way fox shrines, or Inari-jinja. Pantheon. You know, intellectually speaking. But really, the shr...

They knows when you’ve been sleeping. March 12, 2012 at 11:13 am ( Japan. But, what really interested me was the supernatural creatures involved in these ceremonies. Specifically Namagahe (なまはげ). Now, my first introduction to Namagahe was last year when I roadtripped from Ishikawa to Aomori over Golden Week. When we were driving through Akita, I began to notice sign after sign which portrayed Oni with long hair and a big knife in hand. They were everywhere! Because Santa has a big knife and looks hungry.

Oni and the Magic Beans | My Yokai Monogatari

https://mshields67.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/oni-and-the-magic-beans

Oni and the Magic Beans. February 3, 2012 at 1:16 pm ( Japan. Just a quick post to celebrate Setsubun (節分), which is today. Held on the third of February every year, it represents the move from winter to spring. In order to prepare for this change, there is a kind of spring cleaning of evil spirits traditionally done. As everyone knows, Oni hate beans(? So baked soybeans known as fukumame (福豆) or lucky beans are great anti-oni devices that won’t put a strain on your budget! Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Vegetable Garden Challenge | Hokuriku Expat Kitchen

https://hkexpatcooking.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/vegetable-garden-challenge

More than survival cooking. July 4, 2012. Our humble veranda garden. This picture was taken a week ago, and it’s amazing to me how much bigger the plants were when I watered them this morning. We had a big vegetable garden when I was a kid. I loved it – loved weeding, loved checking on the plants every day, loved how flavorful our fresh vegetables were. Then the universe, perhaps seeing our feeble but fervent attempts as self-sufficiency, conspired to give us even more than we’d bargained for. Oh man so ...

More than survival cooking. Cheruko has written 52 posts for Hokuriku Expat Kitchen. July 4, 2012. Back in May, my husband and I decided to tackle our first undertaking as a married couple and start a garden. More than survival cooking. Kaga Veggies, Revisited: Kuwai. February 1, 2012. It feels like winter has finally arrived. This morning, the drive to work was slowed by dense, wet snow and howling winds. Every few minutes, the early morning grey turned violet with a sudden, bright flash of lightning. Ah, thunder snow. How I missed you. I’m on an aquatic vegetable kick recently. Is so last week, though. Today, I’m moving on to something a little less common. Do you recognize these? My own home country, where...

But dirty dishes or no dirty dishes, cabbage on the floor or no cabbage on the floor, here it is, 2012. It’s a big year for me. Were okay (and are now a couple of the unmistakable flavors of my childhood), but in general I have to say that as a kid I wasn’t a big fan of all this “hidden tofu.” Tofu, in my mind, was always pretending to be something else, and with limited success. If you said, “It looks like a sandy, dirty root,” you’re not far off. The rhizome of the lotus plant, is a scrumptious winter vegetable that is popular here in Japan. But for those of us who haven’t had much experience purchasing meter-long rootstalks covered in mud at our local supermarket, first forays in. Owes it’s popularity.
