Ramblings from a Middle School Teacher. Sunday, August 2, 2015. The start of a new year - breaking the ice. Tomorrow is the official start of the 2015-2016 school year. Right now, at this unique moment, anything is possible this year - all goals are within our grasp. With the right mindset, the potential is astounding. Below is a quick snapshot of some of the things I do:. 1 A copy goes up on the bulletin board in the front of the room. After all, in our homes we keep pictures of our family, my schoo...

MotivatED - Stories of Teaching and Learning. Monday, June 29, 2015. ISTE Take 1: The Bigger Picture. So I have only been in Philadelphia for two days for the ISTE Annual Conference, and my mind is already bursting from what has been shared. There is much diversity in the kinds of sessions that are offered, the topics that are covered, the delivery or mode of presentation, etcetera. And in spite of the great diversity there are a number of common themes. Here are a few. That's true. The tools are awe...

Ramblings from a Middle School Teacher: November 2014
http://ramblingsfromamiddleschoolteacher.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Ramblings from a Middle School Teacher. Monday, November 24, 2014. I remember a Facebook program a few years ago that ranked the top ten words you used in your posts. Once it caught on, I remember scanning list after list and thinking about how the words matched with the friends I knew in life and their words on-line. They weren't bad - I'd remember that - they just weren't intentional. It was a gentle reminder to be intentional in how you treat others. 1 I'm grateful for God. For His son who loves m...

Engage, Inspire, Lead: It's Almost Time
http://engageinspirelead.blogspot.com/2015/08/its-almost-time.html
Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Monday, August 3, 2015. Photo by Jen Houlette. A few short weeks, and it will be time. Time for schedules, lessons, organizing, preparing, decorating, planning.and so on! But most importantly, it will be time for building relationships, both old and new. So, we spent a lot of time with literature. It was just part of my effort in establishing the type of atmosphere in our classroom: one with kindness, trust, creativity, ...

Engage, Inspire, Lead: April 2015
http://engageinspirelead.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Sunday, April 19, 2015. 8220;Sometimes, you have to look back in order to. Understand the things that lie ahead.”. Overall, I have had a great year! There are so many new things that my students were able to experience (thanks to my team, too) and for that I am grateful. I hope that my students were challenged, engaged, and stretched to try some new things because I know I was for sure! Was my school year perfect? Certai...

Ramblings from a Middle School Teacher: End of the year musings
http://ramblingsfromamiddleschoolteacher.blogspot.com/2015/05/end-of-year-musings.html
Ramblings from a Middle School Teacher. Tuesday, May 26, 2015. End of the year musings. Well, another end of the school year has come and gone . . . The room is packed up tight, desks stacked in the corner, chairs tower over them. My workspace is wiped clean - no papers, no clips, no books scattered about. The plants are gone, the printer sits quietly in the corner. The cords are unplugged, the colorful messages packed away. I dislike the end of the year. But I miss my students. I still miss them. It wil...

Engage, Inspire, Lead: Carve a Tunnel
http://engageinspirelead.blogspot.com/2015/08/carve-tunnel.html
Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Saturday, August 1, 2015. 8220;Carve a tunnel of hope through the dark mountain of disappointment.”. Martin Luther King, Jr. Photo by Jen Houlette. Disappointment and anger were evident in his eyes. Tight lips and crossed arms added to his posture and I knew something was wrong. A few rude comments from another boy had started off this day with him feeling trapped in a tunnel. Surrounded by many other kids, but yet alone.

Engage, Inspire, Lead: June 2015

Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Keys are unique and have different purposes. Some are used daily to protect, to ignite, and to unlock. Others are not as important until they are needed urgently and (ironically) cannot be found. And a few are probably long forgotten, taking up space in the junk drawer. One thing all keys have in common though - they are a specific tool. For a specific purpose. No one tool that works for everyone.

Engage, Inspire, Lead: Taking Root
http://engageinspirelead.blogspot.com/2015/05/taking-root.html
Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Stay true to your roots, but don't forget to allow. Your branches to grow wide and your leaves unfold to the sun. Time allows roots to grow deep. Underneath the surface, the roots tell so many stories. They reach far and wide, become interconnected, and help to provide the tree with life-giving water and minerals. They help to anchor the tree and provide a networked base. Roots are also incredibly.

Ramblings from a Middle School Teacher: Finding Adventure
http://ramblingsfromamiddleschoolteacher.blogspot.com/2015/03/finding-adventure.html
Ramblings from a Middle School Teacher. Friday, March 6, 2015. Adventure calls us. It lurks around the corner. It whispers in an ear. Sometimes it's giant and yells at us through a megaphone. Other times it's quiet and sits waiting to be noticed. Then there is the adventure that nags at us, trying to engage, stop, and notice. It's a gift that has been given to us. Like all gifts, once given freely, it's up to us how we use it. March 6, 2015 at 7:41 AM. Its the quiet adventures that I dont want to miss...
