I am a teacher et cetera: Presenting with Students
http://www.jenniferward.org/2015/06/presenting-with-students.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Photo by Billy Krakower as we took our morning brain break at #TCT15. This past Friday, as teachers from all over the world started packing their suitcases for the annual International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference. Organized by the amazing team of Evolving Educators. The opening keynote by Cybraryman. Who really does have a web page for everything), and a crowdsourced lunchtime keynote by my friend Rich Kiker. And three of my students! Two other students, ...
I am a teacher et cetera: Are We Virtually Connected Or Are We Connected?
http://www.jenniferward.org/2014/08/are-we-virtually-connected-or-are-we.html
Thursday, August 7, 2014. Are We Virtually Connected Or Are We Connected? I find this ironic having just spent the summer attending and presenting at a wide variety of education conferences where many of the presenters, myself included, are sharing strategies and ideas for addressing individual learners needs. Recently, while attending a session at the EdTech Teacher Summit. Can you count to 10? Do you know your phone number? And like Philip and his son, my son and I have not opened that bag of homework.
I am a teacher et cetera: Not Another Boring Book Report
http://www.jenniferward.org/2015/04/not-another-boring-book-report.html
Sunday, April 5, 2015. Not Another Boring Book Report. My tenth grade English students just finished up their independent reading projects, but I didn't have them create just another boring book report. Instead, students used ThingLinks. By focusing on curating research, we were able to spend time talking about responsible research and what makes a scholarly source. Students were tasked with compiling a works cited for all their links, which we used the Easy Bib. On the American Library Association's.
I am a teacher et cetera: Bringing our Time to a Close
http://www.jenniferward.org/2015/06/bringing-our-time-to-close.html
Wednesday, June 10, 2015. Bringing our Time to a Close. These are the days that are difficult to write about. These ending days. As the school year comes to a close, as seniors don their graduation gowns and teachers begin to pack up their rooms, I am reminded that this year is a closing of a different sort. I am moving on with my graduating seniors. My classroom has become a metaphor for change. Earlier this year, my classroom won an award. But at the same time, these empty walls are also full of possib...
I am a teacher et cetera: No more CheckBrics
http://www.jenniferward.org/2015/06/no-more-checkbrics.html
Monday, June 29, 2015. Has greatly influenced how I think about the work that is done by students in my classroom. Busy-work has no place in my classroom. What type of feedback does a student get from this? As Peter Afflerbach points out in Understanding and Using Reading Assessment K-12. So, I am banning checkbrics from my classroom. I am a teacher et cetera: May 2015
http://www.jenniferward.org/2015_05_01_archive.html
Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Please Take Out Your Phone. A colleague walked into our faculty workroom during lunch, excited. A quick push of buttons and ten copies of this article. Flew off the copy machine. "Did you see this? Flickr Creative Commons image by Johan Larsson. This made me want to scream. Instead, I picked up the copy of this month's Educational Leadership. Titled " Five Tips for Managing Mobile Devices. And the piece about smartphone integration by experts Lisa Nielsen. Both point out the flaws ...

I am a teacher et cetera: Day One
http://www.jenniferward.org/2013/09/day-one.html
Friday, September 13, 2013. Cross posted at the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project blog. And it is here where the tone of our class is set. Students are expected to write every day. Students are expected to collaborate. Students are expected to think carefully and critically. But I don’t have to stand in front of them and tell them that. They learn this by doing it. Starting with day one. I can use class time to draft, conference, and revise with students. Photo credit: picture by mrsdkrebs.
I am a teacher et cetera: The ThingLink Summer Challenge for Educators
http://www.jenniferward.org/2015/07/the-thinglink-summer-challenge-for.html
Saturday, July 4, 2015. The ThingLink Summer Challenge for Educators. If you've been following my blog recently, you'll know that I've become obsessed with ThingLink. As a creative curation tool. I have Christy Brennan. To thank for this. She introduced me to ThingLink about this point last year when she used it in one of our professional development workshops. I've been hooked ever since. And as a teacher, ThingLink is a perfect tool for sharing out student work. Another of my favorite tools). Then ...
