History – MT Kent

The South Eastern Tug Society. The Kent was built in 1948 by Richards Ironworks of Lowestoft for J. P. Knight, Rochester. The Kent began her life on the Medway berthing ships in the Port of Rochester and Sheerness. When the BP Refinery opened at the Isle of Grain it was the Kent who assisted the first British Tanker onto the berth. Over the years she was deployed in various locations with spells in Scotland, coastal and near continental towing. Length 88 feet / 27 metres. Beam 22 feet / 6.7 metres.

The South Eastern Tug Society. MT Kent is based in Basin No.1 at Chatham Marina in Kent. Together with its 1966 cousin they take part in events throughout the year, and every Tuesday and Saturday morning the volunteers will be pleased to show interested people around and talk about the boats. The Kent is a well known attraction at various festivals around the east coast of England, and across the sea in the Netherlands and Belgium. What’s on in 2014. January 4th - 12th. Every Tuesday and Saturday morning.

The South Eastern Tug Society. The South Eastern Tug Association is an organisation that aims to preserve and maintain a collection of historic tugs and allow them to be used to further study of this area of maritime history. The society has a base within the former Royal Navy Dockyard at Chatham where its small but growing collection is permanently on display. The collection currently consists of the 1948 Kent, 1966 Fearnought both previously operated by JP Knight and the 1928 vintage Barking boats.

A Cruising Diary of our Barge Amy plus the occaisional bits of our liveaboard life. Tuesday, 27 July 2010. Oostende voor anker 2010 pt3. The next morning saw us both up and about very early, steve to make preparations in the engine room and me to make a flask of coffee and ensure there was enough fresh water and snacks in the wheel house for our expected 10 hour trip. We followed the fleet to the North East edge of the Goodwin Sands the turn East for our own trip to Oostende. The good ship Mary Jane.
