Learning from Scratch: Renovating a house in Brittany: September = wiring, rebuilding, destruction
http://brittanyrenovationfromscratch.blogspot.com/2013/09/september-wiring-rebuilding-destruction.html
Learning from Scratch: Renovating a house in Brittany. Tuesday, 24 September 2013. September = wiring, rebuilding, destruction. The new central heating system comes at the end of the week so the clock's ticking to get as much as possible done for the plumber. The less he does, the cheaper he is! Cutting out the old steel heating pipes. With a junior hacksaw. Making a conduit track in the loft to keep the wiring above the insulation. Wiring the upstairs lights. Make the hearth ventilation neat and central...

“…and then the grass turned into soil!” (70 days to go) |
https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/and-then-the-grass-turned-into-soil-70-days-to-go
Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. 8220;…and then the grass turned into soil! 8221; (70 days to go). It’s been all quiet busyness at Kervéguen this week. Just plodding progress constrained by the limitations of one slightly old, slightly fat and ever-so-weary man. Bears the gentle euphemism ‘hay’ for this neglected set up…. Now look at it! Funny though how such principles were nowhere to be seen when a friendly local farmer showed up out of the blue in a big, blue tractor. He wondered if ...

Retrospective (12 days to go…) |
https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/05/19/retrospective-12-days-to-go
Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. Retrospective (12 days to go…). Reverie about how much things had changed soon got me thinking (in a very middle-aged way) about how I’d ended up having a ragged, happy birthday in a toolshed in Brittany rather than the pre-ordained one: dejected in a suit in a bar in West Yorkshire. Why had my official life plan unravelled so absolutely? But I do know that strimmer is working just fine now. Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window). May 19, 2011.

Learning from Scratch: Renovating a house in Brittany: September 2013
http://brittanyrenovationfromscratch.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Learning from Scratch: Renovating a house in Brittany. Friday, 27 September 2013. Boiler house re-rendered and top of wall re-built. Hearth plastered, awaiting false oak lintel and cover place. Conduit tracks in the loft to go over the insulation. Platform over new joists to take header tanks. I was a bit toasty doing this! Bit like working in a sauna for people under 4ft tall while wearing a woolly jumper 10cm thick! Trying to hide placcy surface mounting stuff for the lights. Tuesday, 24 September 2013.

Stop gap solution (36 days to go..) |

Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. Stop gap solution (36 days to go.). Sometimes it feels like water, time and cash are the same substance. They all flow (generally in one direction – away! They’re easy to take for granted, until scarcity requires you to be more resourceful. And a severe deficit in any defeats self-sufficiency. I’m going to keep plodding on, not least because the effort laid down in previous months requires it. And I’m getting a great tan out there! Click to share on Reddit (...

Vegetables in mind (66 days to go…) |
https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/03/29/vegetables-in-mind-66-days-to-go
Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. Vegetables in mind (66 days to go…). Delight I’ve created relies upon the smooth operation of three distinct parts. During the spring rush, the greenhouse, the polytunnel and the field together should form a production line which smoothly and efficiently takes seeds in at one end and, some time later, gobs out perfect vegetables at the other. If you could open my brain and peer inside, it would probably look a bit like this:. Between starting and finishing t...

Strawberry season (22 days to go…) |
https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/05/09/strawberry-season-22-days-to-go
Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. Strawberry season (22 days to go…). Some things didn’t like August in April. I planted hundreds of broad beans in October for nothing. And the peas sown at the same time are looking pallid and weedy. But, for some reason, none of this seems to matter today! This slideshow requires JavaScript. The Last Post ( 1 day to go…) |
https://ruralidiocy.wordpress.com/2011/05/31/the-last-post-1-day-to-go
Welcome to our home…. A handmade peasant life. The Last Post ( 1 day to go…). The countdown is complete. Thanks to a big push over the last couple of weeks, there are now bottles and bottles of elderflower cordial in the fridge and jar upon jar of strawberry jam on the shelves. The early potatoes have been dug up and the paltry beans and peas podded and frozen. Each day starts with bread-making and ends with – well, nothing! 8211; the last (commercial) wine having been supped and the last coffee drunk.

bees: ready for arctic adventure? | Skunk Hollow Trail
https://skunkhollowfarm.wordpress.com/2011/11/15/bees-ready-for-arctic-adventure
Where life smells g o o d. Bees: ready for arctic adventure? Last spring we started keeping bees for the first time. It has been a learning experience, most of it fun and good. Like the 35 lbs of honey our best hive gave us! Getting stung on the ankle made E unhappy but otherwise it hasn’t been too bad really. Thirty five lbs of honey amounts to about 15 frames worth, and there are 9 frames per super so you can calculate that each super might give a bit over 20 lbs. Why is that important? You are comment...
