This firing process consists of firing a kiln, filled with pieces that is heated over 2200 or 2340 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of 6-10 hours. The kiln is then turned off and allowed to cool naturally. The atmosphere in the kiln (how much uncombusted gas there is) during the firing determines how any given glaze looks when it is finished.

Mudman Studios, Conor Muldoon, ceramic artist and clay guru. Typically fired to 2340 degrees Fahrenheit, this firing process is the same as a standard high fire with one exception. At the end of the firing (the last 50 degrees), salt or soda is introduced into the kiln by means of spraying or salt burritos. The salt and/or soda then vaporizes, causing glazes to melt a little more leaving beautiful colors and textures on any unglazed surface.
