Muffy Young Handweaving and Cloth Design

I have been a handweaver and dyer since 1978. These scarves and shawls are all hand woven and hand dyed. My loom has 24 harnesses instead of the more usual 4 or 8. This allows me to design highly complex structures, and to combine them in a single piece for intriguing variations in scale, texture, and motif. My designs are original, unique, and innovative, with images inspired by nature, modernism, and the fabrics of Latin American, Central Asia, and Africa. This picture illustrates two very different directions I have been running in, getting ready for the big ACC winter show in February down in Baltimore. One direction is towards refinement with a minimalist design and only two colors- either black and white or black and charcoal gray. Biography | Muffy Young Handweaving and Cloth Design

I make scarves, shawls, and occasionally wall pieces in my studio in Waltham, Massachusetts. My early education was in Mathematics. This informs my work and helps me in the design of complex structures. I combine these structures in my weaving, looking for intriguing variations in scale, texture, and motif. In the past, I have collaborated with other accomplished and talented women, especially Ruth Hodges, and Ellie von Wellsheim, who designed and created beautiful clothing from my handwoven fabrics.

This year, there are four new or updated patterns. Black warp, 24 harness twills and diamonds, heavier weight than X's and O's from 2014. Wefts in solid colors or color block styles.
