The Carpenter's Workshop. 2017 is an exciting year with another team heading out at Easter to implement a workshop program for men in the local community. There is much to do! A slab was waiting for the 2014 team, and the building for the workshop was mostly completed, apart from the roof and some rudimentary fit out, before the team returned to Australia. An amazing effort in such a short time! The Community Centre was completed and in 2011, Leigh returned to Uganda to purchase 14 treadle sewing machines.

Heart is where the home is. The team landed at Entebbe and were greeted by our Watoto hosts, including Peter, one of the Musaale directors. Peter hosted us for 2 weeks in Kampala. We built a house for the Watoto Childcare Ministries, returned home to Australia and, keeping in contact with Peter, enquired whether we could return in 2008 but this time hoping to experience true Ugandan culture by staying in a village.

Many of the community schools in the village areas do not have a copy of a school curriculum and learning programs. Hence, teachers have to walk several kilometres to another local government school and hand-write the learning programs for that week. This has to be repeated on a weekly basis. White chalk is treasured by small rural schools with a shortage of classroom equipment. Some feel fortunate to have an old blackboard that is almost impossible to read and a few benches for the children to sit on.

Now, when we say 14 Singer treadle machines, you have visions of those beautiful antiques in Grandma's back room. Someone even asked naively why we didn't just sell the antique machines and send the money as they're worth so much. It was humbling to see so little mean so much in a life-changing moment of recognition.

The future | Musaale

Unfinished buildings are a common sight in Uganda, building to a certain height and having insufficient funds to complete the building. Musaale plans to strategically identify buildings to complete and sell for a profit. This will provide local jobs and funds to further develop projects in other communities. We hope to put together a Ugandan construction team to work on these buildings as an ongoing, sustainable venture initially with an Australian engineer and qualified master builder.

Leigh enquired whether the building could be purchased. Peter made enquiries, discovering the building was in fact for sale as well as the surrounding land, and the transaction took place with the building earmarked for a school.
